Huawei debuts Watch 2 and Watch 2 Classic at MWC 2017

As expected, Huawei has announced the eagerly anticipated Huawei Watch 2 as it takes another stab at the smartwatch market. The device comes in two variants – the more capable Sports version and a stainless steel Classic version.

Announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on Sunday, both watches are IP68 certified for water and dust resistance and come with GPS and a heart rate sensor. Unlike the predecessor model, the new watches continuously track heart rate, similar to the Fitbit Charge 2.

There are 4G and non-4G version to choose from. Which means the watches can function on their own even without a paired smartphone nearby. The Huawei Watch 2 includes LTE, while the Classic version doesn’t support it.

Both the smartwatches feature a 1.2-inch 390X390p display and are powered by a 1.1GHz Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset with 4GB of internal storage and 768MB of RAM. With a 45mm diameter, the chunky looking wearable is not exactly the smallest smartwatch available on the market.

The Sport model boasts a more rugged design with a bigger bezel and rubberized band. It also comes with an added customizable button for app shortcuts. The watch will allow you to go running or cycling with your favorite workout beats, while guided and motivated by real-time coaching, and have your trail mapped via GPS, all without the burden of a phone.

The Classic model, on the other hand, features a fancier design. The rather traditional looking timepiece comes with a standard 22mm leather strap, and is available in a choice of straps including a textured black leather finish.

In terms of battery life, the watches will keep going for up to two days on a full charge and three days without cellular connectivity. Huawei claims that a new low-power mode will tell the time and track your steps for up to 25 days. That’s right folks – one month battery life, albeit with limited functionality.

This is the company’s second smartwatch and follows on from the original device launched back in 2015. The Chinese company has opted for a rugged, bulkier and sporty design this time around. Fans of the original Huawei Watch with its elegant, simple design, might want to look elsewhere.

Its fair to say Android Wear and the smartwatch category as a whole have been struggling lately. The recent launch of Android Wear 2 along with two new LG and Huawei watches should hopefully give it a much needed boost. Huawei says the new watches will start at around $350 depending on the design and features chosen. Availability will start in March.
