In the wearables market, Samsung offers a number of smartwatches and activity trackers, as well as their Tizen open-source operating system.
Gear Fit is a 24/7 fitness tracker that will keep tabs on your activites throughout the day. There is also an optical heart rate sensor and Gear Fit will provide you with real time coaching to help you achieve your fitness goals. You’ll get smartphone notifications too, and can reject calls with messages, quick reply to messages and control alarms.
In terms of looks, you’ll find an advanced curved Super AMOLED touchscreen display with interchangeable bands so you can make it your own. There is also a variety of background colours, wallpapers, and clock designs for you to set to customize it further.
This is very much an entry level device now that has been superseded with more advanced models. You might be able to pick it up at a sizable discount though.
Samsung’s popular second generation fitness tracker uses a range of sensors to keep tabs on your activity levels including steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, and sleep quality. It can even automatically identify the different types of physical activities such as running, cycling, working out on the elliptical, and more.
In terms of design, Gear Fit2 features a beautiful curved full-color Super AMOLED screen that displays real-time activity stats along with texts and other alerts from your iOS or Android smartphone. The fitness tracker boasts 0.5 GB RAM and 4.0 GB of internal memory, while under the hood you will find an accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor and GPS for mapping your runs.
Gear Fit2 Pro is a high-end version of the Gear Fit2 rather than a totally new, third generation device. The main news here is waterproofing. The tracker is water-resistant down to 50 meters. This means you can finally leave your Samsung wearable strapped to your wrist while you take a shower or bath.
If you decide to dive headfirst in the pool, the Speedo app will record your stats (stroke type, stroke count, and lap count), and show them in easy-to-read summaries. It will also provide you with “SWOLF”, which is a measure of stroke efficiency.
At 33 grams, Gear Fit 2 Pro weights only only slightly more than its predecessor. It is also slightly bigger. There is now a new and improved buckle strap to ensure the tracker stays on your wrist while you’re swimming.
This is a sleek timepiece that comes in a number of different designs and a choice of materials. And with its stylish variety of bands and watch faces, you are sure to tailor it to your taste. The device features a circular interface and a unique rotating bezel that lets you navigate through notifications, apps and widgets quickly.
With Gear S2, you can track your daily activity levels, heart rate and water versus caffeine intake through the app. The device will spit out motivational messages, notifications, texts and news from your phone right on your wrist. There is also offline storage for up to 300 songs.
Samsung has partnered up with a growing portfolio of apps. This includes everything from fitness apps, to software to keep you home secure.
On the minus side, the battery life is not that great. Gear S2 will only run for 24 hours which means you will be charging it every night.
Gear S3 comes with an upgraded design, built-in GPS and much better battery life. Again, the bezel, the crown and the crystal, can be turned, pressed or tapped to navigate your way around the screens. It comes in a variety of different designs all featuring the always on 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display.
Gear S3 has a built-in GPS for more precise data and mapping your runs. The fact that it has built-in storage for music too, means you have freedom from your phone when you go for those runs. And with its 72 hour long-lasting battery, you only need to set it down for a charge every few days.
Furthermore, the Gear S3 has a built-in speaker that lets you make or take calls right away on the device. You do need a paired smartphone to make calls though.
The hint is in the name. This is a very sporty looking gadget that has been designed to offers a blend of fitness tracking and smartwatch functionality in one slick, water-resistant package.
In terms of design, Gear Sport certainly doesn’t disappoint. Its full colour, always-on, 1.2-inch circular screen with a 320 x 320 resolution is very vibrant and colorful. The numbers are displayed in large and easy to read fonts.
Under the hood you will find quite a bit going on. There is an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, heart rate sensor, ambient light and built-in GPS. Samsung says its new wearable benefits from improved accuracy when it comes keeping tabs on your ticker.
In addition to tracking your fitness, the timepiece will support the company’s Samsung Pay service with its NFC hardware. There is also offline support for Spotify, which means you can download music and store it directly on your watch.
We caught a glimpse of it at IFA in Berlin and walked away very impressed. Its definitely a very attractive timepiece. Lets hope it performs as well as it looks.
Charm is a lifestyle band designed to look like a piece of jewellery. It uses a small LED to make you aware of incoming or missed calls and messages, as well as push alerts from applications that you can select via the smartphone app. Color-coded notifications display information about charging, connectivity status and battery level.
Charm also doubles up as a basic activity tracker. Simply sync it with a smartphone via Bluetooth and pair it with the accompanying app to see how many steps you’ve taken, how much distance you’ve covered over the course of a day and how many calories you’ve burned. The device sports on-board memory, so even if you don’t have your smartphone with you, the wearable will continue to gather fitness data.
To suit both men and women the tracker comes in two versions, bar and square-shaped. There are also three colors to choose from, Rose Quartz, Gold and Black.
