Apple’s next Activity Challenge to mark Grand Canyon National Park anniversary

The next Apple Watch activity challenge is slated for Sunday, August 25th. This one is being held to mark 100 years of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The famous Arizona tourist destination was opened back in 1919. It now has over 6 million visitors per year making it one of the most visited parks in the United States. Its central feature is the enormous gorge of the Colorado river. This is sometimes considered as one of the Wonders of the World.

This challenge is a bit different from the previous ones in that it requires users to complete a specific workout with a specific distance. Typically challenges are less particular and involve time-based tasks.

As originally discovered by Kyle Seth Gray on Twitter, users are required to do a walk, run, hike or wheelchair workout of at least three miles. If you live in Arizona, you may actually want to walk the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge and back, as this is the exact distance needed to complete the task.

If you are, watch out for the rock squirrel! It is considered the most dangerous animal in the park. Dozens of visitors are bitten each year when they try to feed these animals.

This is how Apple describes the Activity Challenge:

On August 25, earn an award inspired by Grand Canyon National Park’s 100th anniversary. Record a walk, run, hike, or wheelchair workout of at least three miles (4.8KM) — the distance of the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge and back.

Three miles is quite a trek but it is achievable for most people. It equates to around 6,000 steps which is below the daily target most people aim for. Around 45 minutes is all it should take.

As before, those who successfully complete the task will be rewarded with two unique Apple Watch award badges (pictured above) that can be used in Messages and FaceTime. They’ll also see a virtual trophy in the Achievements tab of the iPhone Activity app.

This is the fifth challenge this year. It comes about two months after the previous one for International Yoga Day. That one required users will need to complete a yoga workout of 15 minutes or more.
