Fitness trackers and smartwatches are a great tool to help you boost your health and fitness but let’s face it – some of these devices can be quite pricey. As more and more players enter the market wearables are becoming cheaper, but it is still the big brand names which dominate sales. This is for a reason. Hardware can sometimes be easier to emulate than software and it is companies such as Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung and Apple that still offer the better overall package.

So let’s talk about Fitbit.

The company has released this year the Versa 2, Versa Lite and Inspire range. The first of these is a great device and is our recommendation for someone looking for a fitness watch. It comes with everything from the previous generation but with some extras. This includes a better screen, longer battery life, more powerful processor and  Amazon Alexa support.

Inspire HR and its non-heart rate variant are great options for someone just starting to track fitness. They take everything offered by predecessor devices and package it in a slim and attractive form factor. These devices also make the Alta HR, Alta, Flex 2, and much older Zip and One trackers redundant. You can still buy them, but only while stocks last.

For the average person who is interested in tracking their fitness around the clock and does the occasional run here and there, any Fitbit fitness tracker will do. If you are a swimmer or are after something more sophisticated, Versa 2 is the way to go.

Here’s our pick of the current deals.

Fitbit Versa range

When it comes to features, Versa 2 is a timepiece that puts fitness first. It comes with everything you’d expect from a Fitbit device, along with capturing real-time stats on 20 different types of activities including swimming. Admittedly there is the lack of built-in GPS (in favor of Connected GPS), but you are unlikely to notice this unless you are an avid runner. This also helps keep the price down.

Versa Lite is the more affordable version of Fitbit’s popular smartwatch. It doesn’t have on-board Wi-Fi and on-board storage for music of its big brother but comes with everything else.

The main reason for choosing Versa 2 over Versa is the bigger, more high-res display. You also have an always-on option, slightly longer battery life and some extras such as Alexa built-in. However the original remains a solid option.

All things considered, this is a great smartwatch. Its simple to use and comes with most things the average person would want from a fitness device.

Fitbit Charge 3 is our pick as the best fitness band for the average person who does the occasional run here and there. It comes with a large OLED, high-res display, water-proofing and excellent 7 day battery life.

You’ll find everything you need for 24/7 activity monitoring, along with a great software ecosystem. Last but certainly not least are the smart features. These have progressed so much that they are starting to blend the line between fitness tracker and smartwatch.

Fitbit Inspire and Inspire HR

Inspire HR does not come with anything revolutionary. Rather, it repackages Fitbit’s existing technology into a more modern form-factor, and makes it affordable to the masses. In a sense, the activity band sits somewhere between the Alta HR and Charge 3. The device is a good option for those starting to track their fitness as it covers the basics without overloading you with data.

Those that prefer a slim, discreet look will be perfectly happy with Inspire HR. It’s currently one of the best value for money fitness trackers in Fitbit’s range. Fitbit also sells a non-HR variant (view on Amazon), although we suggest you go for the full package.

With its blocky, retro design, Ionic may not be a looker but at least it packs some decent specs under the hood. When it comes to activity monitoring, the watch includes almost everything Fitbit has on offer.

For outdoor fitness tracking, the built-in GPS/GLONASS will keep tabs on your pace, distance, elevation and split times. Fitbit has, however, taken its first timepiece beyond the fitness tracking environment. You get 2.5GB of internal storage for music, notifications and payments.

Fitbit Alta HR

Fitbit calls the Alta HR the “world’s slimmest” wrist-worn tracker with a continuous heart rate sensor. With this fitness band, the company has shown that it is possible to bring its Pure Pulse technology to a device this narrow.

In addition to heart rate, the Alta HR can track steps, distance, calories and sleep. The only thing it won’t do is count floors. As you’d expect, there are some non-fitness features as well. The device, which weighs only 15 grams, also displays notifications for incoming calls, text messages and calendar alerts.

This is an Alta lookalike that is specifically designed for kids 8 and older. The showerproof device automatically tracks steps, active minutes, sleep and provides encouragement to be active. It has up to 5 days of battery life and comes in two vibrant colours.

Because it has an OLED tap display, your kid can see their progress in real time. The tracker dishes out rewards for moving with celebratory messages and fun, collectible badges. And, if you have a Fitbit yourself you can promote a bit of friendly family competition.

If dad already has a great fitness tracker, pair it with the Fitbit Flyer wireless headphones. These buds are sweat-proof and water resistant so will survive the most robust of workouts, come rain or shine. You’ll get 6 hours playtime with music and call controls via the 3-button control box. A 15-minute quick charge over Micro USB will get you another hour of battery life.

The headphones are able to connect with two devices at the same time so you can keep them talking to both your smartphone and smartwatch. There’s the additional bonus of a quick pairing feature with Ionic.
