Meizu trademarks name for its first proper smartwatch, Q4 2020 launch

Chinese smartphone maker Meizu is on course to release its first proper smartwatch in Q4 2020. To this end it has trademarked the names “MEIZU Watch” and “Flyme For Watch”.

In case you are wondering why we use the word “proper”, this is because the company has already released a smart(ish) watch back in 2016. It is a hybrid called Meizu Mix (or Meizu Light) and it came with some smartphone notification functionality and a pedometer for counting steps. But that’s pretty much where the smart functionality ended.

Now we are getting a much more serious attempt at a smartwatch from the company which is known for a range of smart looking smartphones. Meizu began in 2003 as a manufacturer of MP3 and MP4 players. Five years later, it shifted its focus to smartphones. It is now the 11th largest smartphone manufacturer in the world although most of these sales are in its home country.

A couple of posters uploaded in June to Flyme’s (the company’s Android skin) official Weibo account hint at an upcoming smartwatch to be launched by the end of this year. Nothing has been revealed yet on specs but it is expected to have the Flyme For Watch software on board. This is the company’s proprietary firmware for smartphones that is based on the Android operating system.

A small image in the corner of one of the posters shows a squarish looking device. If this turns out to be the case Meizu will not win any points for originality. Other Chinese companies, such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Redmi, have gone down the route of imitating the Apple Watch in recent months.
