Galaxy Watch 5 & Watch 5 Pro pre-orders to begin on August 10th

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and its more capable 5 Pro variant will reportedly launch on August 10th. This is according to high profile tech leaker Jon Prossier. Along with the date, he tweeted the size options and the colours of the upcoming watches.

The regular iteration will launch in a 40mm and a 44mm case. The first will be available in a Phantom Black, Silver or Pink case – the second in Phantom Black, Silver and Sapphire. Pro only comes in a 46mm size and Phantom Black and Silver colour options.

The company is pretty regular at dishing out at least one new version of its smartwatch every year. Typically, this is around the time IFA in Berlin is held. This year Europe’s largest tech gathering will be in early September.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Watch 5 range open on August 10th, but the actual launch is on the 26th. No doubt, Samsung will be at IFA proudly showcasing their latest timepiece. Last year IFA was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 it adopted mainly a virtual format for the same reason.

Galaxy Watch 5 – confirmation appears in app

Another confirmation that we will, indeed, soon get a new iteration of the Galaxy Watch comes from the beta update of the Samsung Health app. It goes by version number 6.22.0.069. And while the software doesn’t bring any newsworthy updates it does have one interesting addition. If you scan for accessories, Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro appear as possible options.

Galaxy Watch 5

What’s interesting to note is that there is no mention of Galaxy Watch 5 Classic. This seems to confirm earlier rumours that Samsung may be planning to retire that edition. Which means, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic might be the last timepiece in that range.

This is very reminiscent of last year’s leak. About a month before the official launch of Galaxy Watch 4 and its Classic iteration, a mention of both was found in the Beta of the Samsung Health app. At the time, the company used placeholder images of Galaxy Watch Active 2 for the more sporty looking Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 3 for Watch 4 Classic. This time it is using the image of Watch 4 for for both Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro.

Not much is known about the upcoming devices although there is talk they will not have a rotating bezel. Watch 4 Classic is the only model in the current lineup with this feature.

Other information hints that the watches may be built of more premium materials than the current version. This includes sapphire glass and titanium. What is also expected is a hefty 572mAh battery, along with possibly a thermometer for taking skin temperature measurements.
