Apple Watch’s first-ever “Running Day Challenge” takes off June 5th

Apple Watch users are gearing up for a new kind of challenge – one that specifically caters to runners. On June 5th, 2024, the company will launch its first-ever “Running Day Challenge” to coincide with Global Running Day. This unique event invites users of all levels to lace up their shoes and hit the pavement (or treadmill) for a virtual 5K.

Mark your calendar for the task, which takes place exclusively next Wednesday. Use the Apple Watch’s Workout app to record any running workout and reach the distance goal of at least 5 kilometres (3.1 miles). What you need to do doesn’t sound too difficult.

As a reward for your efforts, you’ll earn a special digital badge to showcase your accomplishment in the Fitness app, along with unique, running-themed stickers to use in Messages and FaceTime.

Here is what some of them look like.

Apple has made this challenge inclusive for all runners. Whether you prefer the road, trail, track, or the comfort of a treadmill, every running workout counts towards completing the challenge. This flexibility ensures that anyone with an Apple Watch can participate, regardless of their preferred terrain.

While Apple has hosted numerous activity challenges in the past, this marks the first time one has landed on for this occasion. Global Running Day, held annually in early June, aims to unite runners worldwide and promote the benefits of running for physical and mental well-being. Apple’s challenge adds a fun, interactive element to this global celebration.

The last Apple Watch challenge landed on May 21st, to mark Global Meditation day. That one required users to record a minimum of five minutes of mindfulness using the Mindfulness app.

Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a casual jogger, the Running Day Challenge presents a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, connect with fellow runners, and earn some exclusive rewards. Mark your calendar for June 5th and get ready to hit the ground running!
