Smart scales connect wirelessly to your smartphone, tablet or computer to fitness apps. Step on one of these, and your weight data will magically find its way to a corresponding software on your mobile device or a Web dashboard. Using the app or dashboard, you can then track your progress over time which should help you make healthy choices as far as diet and exercise.

Scales that also measure body fat and other advanced metrics do this by sending a low electrical current through one foot and reading the current with a sensor under the other foot. The current passes through fat more slowly so the scale calculates the amount of resistance to come up with a body fat percentage. This is often referred to as bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).

Consumer Reports tested six popular bathroom scales a while ago and came to the conclusion that while they were all excellent at measuring body weight, none were particularly accurate when it came to measuring body fat. But they were consistent which means the scales can be used to track relative gains and losses over time as they are comparing like with like.

This doesn’t really come as much of a surprise. The accuracy of body fat and other more exotic measurements such as visceral fat, body water, protein, lean body mass leaves a bit to be desired. These are estimates rather than something that is measured precisely. Hence, many of us have learned to ignore them. The readings are more a nice-to-have rather than something that should be religiously followed. At least until accuracy of such measurements on these types of devices improves. Which will come.

Generally, we can separate smart scales into two camps. The ones that come from well known brands such as Fitbit, Withings and Garmin, and the dozens and dozens of scales released by the lesser known companies. These are generally cheaper, but in many cases also less precise. This article focuses on the more established brands. In our mind, paying a bit more extra is worth it as you get a better quality product, advanced software and more accurate readings

Long overdue for an update, the original Aria scale was released back in April 2012. At the time, it was one of only a handful of connected scales on the market.

Aria 2 was introduced a couple of years ago. It has a fresh design and a few other updates, but its core features remain largely the same. This means the scale tracks weight, BMI, body fat percentage, with now the addition of lean mass. Just like its predecessor, it can recognise up to 8 users and you can set weight goals with a daily calorie plan, log food and other workouts.

Fitbit says its much easier than before to set up the new scale and you can do it over the smartphone using the app. It also offers more accurate readings.

If you’re looking to lose weight or just keep tabs on your current weight, this scale makes a good choice. Particularly if you own a Fitbit fitness tracker or smartwatch as it makes sense to buy from the same brand. It is simple to use. Your weight is transferred to your Fitbit dashboard so that it sits there along with all your other stats.

Garmin Index S2

Garmin is also on the second generation of its scale. The Index S2 is the successor to Garmin’s original S1 scale. Overall, the S2 comes with some nice new upgrades.

The S2 has a sleeker design then its predecessor and bright LCD colour display whilst retaining the same 9 month battery life. You also get enhanced accuracy of sensors and some useful features which allow you to follow your trends without reaching for the smartphone app.

Both generations dish out info on weight (lbs, kg, st), body mass index (BMI), body fat, water percentage, bone mass and skeletal muscle mass. If you don’t want to be bothered with the other metrics, the S2 allows you to choose a weight only option. It also allows for customisation of widgets.

Xiaomi Smart Scale

Perhaps not as feature rich as some of the other connected scales, the Xiaomi scale sells at about half the price of the leading brands.

The device tracks weight and BMI, and connects via Bluetooth to Xiaomi’s Mi Fit iOS and Android apps, so you can track your weight over time. It is capable of managing the weight of up to 16 people with its app, so its suitable for the whole family.

There are 161 LEDs which light up to show your weight. The overall body of the scale has a smooth design and round edges, and is protected by tempered glass panels. The display itself is embedded into the body.

This is a great product, particularly when you factor in the low price. If you own other Xiaomi products such as a smartwatch or fitness band, it makes sense to purchase from the same brand.

Polar Balance Smart Connected Scale

The Polar Balance scale features a large display, to ensure that the digits are easily readable, and a splash-proof glass design. The scale provides you with your weight and BMI, and can be used by up to 10 different people. The biggest selling point of this device though, is the software.

Once you have customised the settings in your profile, the app and web service will provide you with motivational guidance on how to reach your daily activity goal. The app works on the basis that 60% of the excess calories should be cut from your diet and 40% should be burned with activity.

Daily activities such as steps, distance and calories are recorded from one of Polar’s fitness trackers (if you own one), and the food intake you will need to record manually. A interesting aspect is the beautifully designed Weight Loss Speedometer. It comes in the form of an infographic that visually shows how close you are to reaching your weight goals.

Yunmai Wireless Bluetooth Scale

This popular budget option comes from a Chinese manufacturer. Rather impressively, Yunmai measures 10 different body composition stats, including weight, BMI, BMR, hydration, bone mass, body age and more.

It also comes with a well designed app that offers you guidance to help you reach your goals. You can chart your weight fluctuations on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. You also get a composite ‘Health score’ each time you weigh yourself, along with a ‘Fitness Age’ score.

We have to commend Yunmai. Rather than just providing you with raw data and letting you make sense of it, the company tries to show you what exactly you need to do to improve your health. After all, a thin person is not in every case healthier than an overweight person.

All in all, in terms of value for money, this is a great choice.

QardioBase 2

The second generation QardioBase retains the signature circular “floating” look of its predecessor but enhances it with a wider base for added stability. This was one of the main gripes with the previous generation. A new rechargeable battery has also been added that runs for up to a year between charges. The screen is brighter and crisper and there is a better haptic engine installed.

Qardio says it has enhanced the sensor system and introduced new and improved algorithms. This means your weight, body mass index and body composition (% muscle, fat, water, bone) measurements will be more accurate than before. There is also a unique Pregnancy Mode which helps expecting moms safely track their progress during this happy time and beyond.

All measurements are automatically be saved in Qardio’s secure cloud. And you can optionally sync with Apple Health too.

Fitbit Aria Air

Fitbit’s most recent scale is designed to be light on your wallet. It only retails for $49.95 on the company’s website. That is less than half of what you’d pay for its more expensive siblings!

You sacrifice some of the functionality, for the lower price. There’s only Bluetooth sync (so no wi-fi connectivity) and the scale only captures info on weight and body mass index (BMI). And that’s pretty much where it ends. It’s a no-nonsense device which spits out the essentials. The more expensive Aria scales also track body fat percentage and lean mass, hence the higher price.

Design-wise, the scale does not stray too much from other offerings in the Aria range. It features a simple square-ish design that comes in a choice between White or Black. The LCD display is still there although it now lacks the metal ring around it.

Aira Air is great if you are looking for a budget smart scale that is user friendly and that integrates into the Fitbit app and platform of products. You step on it, step off – done. The scale plays nice with Fitbit’s Premium Subscription service, you can set goals, follow weight trends, connect to third party apps and access the Community section for support from other Fitbit users and bragging rights.

Withings Body Cardio

Body Cardio is another scale from French-based Withings. The device looks great, plus you get a host of data some of which is to do with your heart health. One of these metrics is called Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV).

This is info that cannot be found on any other smart scale. It measures arterial stiffness by calculating the time it takes for the pressure wave generated by the heart to travel along the arterial tree and reach your feet. The resulting value can be useful in assessing your risk of having or developing hypertension. Faster speeds indicate stiffer arteries.

The company has also introduced a new Vascular Age metric. It builds on PWV to provide users an even easier way of understanding their heart health. It does this by taking the readings and comparing them to people your age and physical characteristics.

Beyond that you get everything you can wish from a scale and more. What sets this scale apart from the competition is the variety of health data it records. As well as standard weight, BMI and fat percentage figures, every time you step on the scale you get a host of other data including a mini heart health assessment. This is plenty for most people.

In our testing we were very impressed with the Body Cardio. From setup that went without a hitch, to ease of use, to use of data – it simply does the job. An example of how all smart home health appliances should be.

Look & feel

The Yunmai Smart Scale 3 boasts an aesthetically pleasing design. The device is sleek and modern, making it a stylish addition to any bathroom. Its thin and lightweight profile further enhances this minimalistic appeal. As far as I’m aware the scale is only available in white, but this color choice adds to its clean design.

One notable feature of the scale is its extra-large surface area. To be exact, it measures 300 x 300mm which makes it is slightly bigger than many conventional scales. This type of design has the benefit of comfortably accommodating different foot types and weight up to 150 kilograms. It also makes it very stable.

The visual appeal of the scale is further enhanced by the soft rounded edges which feature a 2.5D curved tempered glass. The anti-skid bottom design prevents any sliding around, further ensuring stability and security during use.

Moving quickly on and the upper portion of the scale features an inconspicuous LCD display. You can use this to check your weight and body fat directly on the device. However, for more comprehensive body composition stats you will need to fire up the smartphone app. But more about that later.

When the scale is idle, the display turns off, seamlessly blending with the rest of the design. As soon as you step on the scale, the display lights up. The fonts are rendered in a slightly lighter shade of white compared to the rest of the product, further enhancing its visual appeal.

All things considered, although the Yunmai Smart Scale 3 doesn’t significantly deviate from the look and feel of other smart scales, it offers a solidly built, attractive, and minimalistic design. The extra-large surface area, discreet LCD display, and an anti-skid bottom design, definitely work in its favour.

Under the hood

Under the hood is tech that allows Yunmai Smart Scale 3 to measure an extensive set of 13 body metrics in just 3 seconds. This is courtesy of advanced sensors which pack 8 specialized measuring diodes. This cutting-edge tech doubles the number of sensors found in typical scales with 4-weight G-type and E-type sensors. Furthermore, the Yunmai scale boasts 55mm large electrode measuring diodes. Basically, that’s a lot of fancy languge meaning the scale should take accurate measurements.

Yunmai says the scale’s BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) sensor is designed to minimize error. For those not in the know, a BIA sensor measures the body’s composition by sending a harmless electrical current through the body, gauging resistance in different tissue types based on their water content. That’s how you get the wide range of stats in addition to weight.

As its name implies, this is the third generation in this range, plus there are other Yunmai smart scale products. It is clear that with each new version, the company is improving the tech inside, with much of the focus being on accuracy of collected data.

As far as battery life, the scale doesn’t dissapoint. You can expect a single charge to last approximately 75 days. Presumably that figure has been estimated on the basis that you will weigh yourself once each day. I only tested the scale out for about 10 days so can’t confirm this sort of battery life. However, there’s no reason no to trust this claimed figure. The Yunmai smale smartly conserves battery life by automatically powering off when not in use, helping to achieve the more than two month life between charges.

Refueling is simple; just plug in the provided USB-C cable, or any standard USB-C cable, to replenish the battery. This convenient feature ensures the scale is always ready for use, without the hassle and expense of constantly replacing batteries. Those with scales that rely on batteries know how annoying it can be having to change batteries.

A budget scale that offers a wealth of data

The smart scale space is a crowded one. These products range in price from well-established brands that can set you back $100, to lesser-known brands at significantly lower prices. With its $50 price-tag, the Yunmain Smart Scale 3 fits into the budget category.

But despite its affordable price-tag, I was impressed by the variety of metrics the Yunmai Smart Scale 3 offers. This includes weight, BMI, body fat %, skeletal muscle mass, water %, protein, visceral fat index, bone mass, basal metabolic rate, biological age, fat weight, body fat mass index, and fat-free mass.

To get a comprehensive set of measurements, you’ll need to step barefoot onto the scale, making sure your feet are positioned over the four metal sensors. While you can get weight and body fat percentage without the app, you will need to open the smartphone app while weighing yourself to access all 13 metrics. And this is the one thing I didn’t like about the scale.

Presumably, the idea here is that you will not be interested in the full set of stats each and every time you step on the scale. I would add that smart scales are not entirely accurate for metrics beyond weight. So take all these additional stats with a grain of salt. But I would have prefered something that operates totally independently from the smartphone.

Also, you need to ensure that the scale is on a flat, solid surface for optimal performance. Any soft surface such as a carpet, and the accuracy will suffer. This is because the weight will not be equally distributed to the four sides. If you are moving the scale, allow 10-20 seconds for the tech inside to adjust before stepping on it. All of this is standard stuff.

The data, smartphone app

The scale does dish out data from day to day that is consistant. You are not going to get big jumps which can occur on some of the other scales I tested. I can also confirm that the weight metric it spits out is correct. My body fat per cent metric is also roughly where I expect it to be. As far as the other body composition metrics – experience has thought me to treat them as a nice add-on, but I tend not to place too much belief in them.

The accompanying smartphone app is minimalistic and quite user-friendly. This is the repository of all your historical data and where you can find detailed graphs and charts of health metrics. The Yunmai app is easy to set up, and after providing some basic profile information, you are set to go.

I appreciated that it could store data records for up to 16 people, making it a useful tool for managing the weight of the whole family. Presumably the app learns over time which person has stepped on it by the weight. If it is not sure it will ask before registering the result.

You can see below some screenshots from the app. Everything is displayed in a user friendly format and you can change between day, week, month and year – weight or body fat per cent – views. The app also allows you to set a target weight and this will be shown on the chart for you along with your daily weigh-ins. The feature is useful for keeping an eye on – how far you are from where you want to be.

As far as the additional body composition analysis, there is a lot of data to sync your teeth into. Some of this is only shown for your latest weigh-in, while a selection of other metrics can be seen below the chart for each day. It is helpful that clicking on the additional body composition metrics reveals a new screen. This shows healthy and unhealhy ranges for each metric – along with where you currently stand. There’s also a short explanation on the type of data each metric captures.

I actually found Yunmai Massage Gun EasePro to be more comfortable to hold and use for prolonged periods of time than most other massage guns I’ve tried. It feels like an extension of your arm.

Yunmai’s aerospace-grade motion balance design provides a secure grip on the curved handle. The vibrations in your palms are minimised, which helps. Plus the weight of the device is only 600 grams.

Furthermore, the compact design makes this an extremely portable choice. Toss it in your backpack or exercise bag and you’re ready to go. The premium soft carrying bag that comes with the purchase organises and protects all of the bits and pieces while in transportation. It also ensures you don’t lose any parts of the kit.

A powerful device

With a motor that can hit 3,000 RPM, EasePro is a reasonably powerful gadget for its size. This is combined with a 10mm amplitude and 20kg/44lb of stall force. In English, this means you really have to press very hard against your muscles for the motor to stop. This did not occur in my testing, despite the fact that I pressed quite firmly at times.

The gun has three speed levels and is powerful enough to relax your muscles by melting knots, increasing circulation, and reducing muscular pain and soreness. Despite its strength, the gadget runs quietly, with a noise level of less than 43dB. That’s less noisy than most other devices on the market and is one of the highlights of the device.

There are four attachments in the box that can be used to massage various areas of the body. The ball head is ideal for targeting large muscle groups such as the back, arms, thighs, calves, and other large muscle groups, whereas the flat head is ideal for relaxation and shaping different muscle sections. The U-shaped massage head is intended to massage the neck, both sides of the vertebrae, and the Achilles tendon. Finally, the bullet head is ideal for striking deep tissues like meridians, joints, hands, and soles.

As far as battery life, you can expect up to 460 minutes on a complete charge, giving you plenty of time for quite a few thorough massage sessions. It’s actually enough for a month’s worth of 10-minute treatments. The gadget can be refuelled using the included USB-C cable and it takes about 2 hours to charge from zero to full.

The speed switch and stop button are integrated into the screen and are only visible when the display is turned on. The device can be paused by double-clicking the function button, and restarted with a single press.

Remember to begin with the lowest speed setting and progressively increase as you become more familiar with the device and your muscles become accustomed to the sensation. Also, remember to avoid using the massage gun on bony areas, open wounds, or areas where feeling is reduced.

The function button is the only minor annoyance I have with this device. Because it is a capacitive trigger, it does not protrude from the screen. While this appears nice, I discovered that the device occasionally fails to register a press. As a result, you may have to press more than once at times for it to register.

The EasePro was created with the user’s protection in mind. To avoid overheating, the device will shut down after 10 minutes of continuous use. That feature is meant to protect the device and is commonly found on massage guns. To avoid draining the battery unnecessarily, it will power off after 2 minutes of inactivity.

Indicator light shows how hard to press

A standout feature of the device is the pressure sensor ring light. This shows users how hard they’re pushing against their muscles in real-time.

A light blue colour indicates a gentle massage, whereas a dark blue colour suggests a more powerful massage. If the ring light goes red, it’s time to ease up on the pressure. In fact there is no smartphone app for this device. Which I do not see as a negative in any way. I have far too many apps installed on my phone as it is!

The EasePro massage gun impressed me with its efficacy in massaging sore muscles, in addition to its user-friendly features. It offered a deep, penetrating massage that left my muscles relaxed and revitalised. A notable feature is the device’s slanted grip, which enables users to easily reach difficult-to-reach areas such as the back and shoulders.

Massage therapy as part of a holistic health and wellness regimen can be extremely helpful. But this needs to be done regularly. Because of its light weight and portability, the EasePro is an excellent option for mobile use, whether traveling, working out at the gym, or going on vacation. It’s a no hassle device.

As far as maintenance, there is little to do. It is a good idea to wipe down the massage gun with a clean, damp towel from time to time, charge the battery, and store all the parts in the provided case. Of course, while the Yunmai massage gun is intended to provide deep muscle massage, it should not be used excessively. Also, start with slow speeds and make sure to choose the appropriate attachment for the region that you want to massage.

Yunmai’s massage product line presently consists of six different devices, each with a different price point. The Massage Gun PB (Pro) is $219, the small Massage Gun CosyCare (Mini) is $199, the top-of-the-line Massage Gun SlimChic is $269, the ultra-portable Massage Gun Extra Mini is $129, and the feature-packed Massage Gun SE (Prime) is $179.

The Massage Gun EasePro is one of the most recent additions to the range. At $179, it sits somewhere towards the middle of the price spectrum.

Generally, you can find massage guns vary widely in price, with some models priced as low as $50 and others costing upwards of $500. Yunmai is a well recognised name that is at the more budget-friendly end of this market

Aside from price, there are numerous other factors to consider when selecting the best massage gun for your needs. Size, power, and noise intensity are some of them. Choose characteristics that are important to you, such as deep tissue massage or pain relief. For versatility, look for versions with adjustable speeds and numerous attachments. Examine reviews to pinpoint a model that meets your needs.

Tech specs comparison

There are quite a few smart scales on the market today. From those that come from established brands and sell upwards $100 and more, and those that come from lesser know brands that sell for significantly less.

The Yunmai Mini Smart scale comes from a Chinese manufacturer and with a retail price of around $40 sits squarely in the budget category. You wouldn’t know this, however, by looking at its feature-set. Rather impressively, the scale measures up to 10 different body composition statics, including weight, BMI, BMR, hydration, bone mass, body age and more. It also comes with a well designed app that offers you guidance to help you reach your goals.

We have been testing the Yunmai Mini scale for around a week now. These are our impressions.

The first thing that strikes you when you see this scale is its size. It’s sleek, compact and does not take up a lot of space. And we’re not kidding. Measuring 260 x 260 x 19 mm and weighing only 1 kilogram, it is smaller than most other smart scales on the market. For comparison purposes, the Withings WS-50 scale measures 327 x 327 x 23 mm.

The top of the scale houses four metallic circles, slightly pertruding from the environmental organic polymer finish. You are meant to position your feet on these circles. The LED display comes to life and lights up when you step on the circles. On the underside there are four non-slip rubber feet. This is helpful if you have a smooth floor.

Overall, the scale has a sleek no-nonsense design. It needs 4 AAA batteries to run, and the bundled ones last over 6 months when used daily.

Before you step on the scale the first time the Yunmai app (iOS or Android), will run you through the set-up process. This essentially consists of answering a few basic questions such as your height, sex, weight goal, etc. You can choose to see your weight in pounds, kilograms, or stones.

To weigh yourself, open up the smartphone app, and step on the scale. Bluetooth connects straight away. The scale does not offer a WiFi option, so you do need to have your smartphone nearby when weighing yourself.

The display will only show your weight. For more detailed data, head over to the smartphone app. Yunmai says the scale uses something they call BIA biological resistance to measure body weight, BMI, fat, muscle, bone mass, water, metabolic rate, visceral fat, physical age, visceral fat and protein.

While this is an impressive list, you should take these measurements with a grain of salt. Studies have shown, that while smart scales are precise when it comes to measuring weight, the accuracy deteriorates with other metrics. Nevertheless, you can use these other measurements on a relative basis, charting your progress from day to day.

The app itself is impressive and shows a wealth of data. It does take some getting used to. You can chart your weight fluctuations on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. You will also get a composite ‘Health score’ each time you weigh yourself. We are not sure exactly how this is calculated, presumably a combination of all the metrics. And the app will assign you a ‘Fitness Age’ score. These are both novel metrics that we have not seen with other such devices.

By clicking on any individual category, you get more detailed data and a sliding scale sectioned off into a normal, healthy and very unhealthy range. Your position is charted for each individual category, and if you are not sure for example what Visceral Fat or BMR means, the app includes descriptions of each category so you know exactly what is being calculated.

We compared the readings to the Withings WS-50 scale. Both weight and fat percentage were slightly higher on the Yunmai scale. But the difference was fairly consistant from day to day – for example the weight readings on the Yunmai scale were consistantly 0.5kgs higher than on the Withings scale.

The app syncs with Apple Health. You can choose to sync body fat percentage, body mass index, height, lean body mass and weight. Finally, the scale also features automatic user-identification to store personal data for up 16 users, and saves it all in cloud storage.

We have to say we are impressed with the Yunmai scale. While we are not a particular fan of the mini design and the lack of WiFi connectivity, the scale does the job seamlessly.

Also, we have to commend Yunmai. Rather than just providing you with raw data and letting you make sense of it, the company tries to show you what exactly you need to do to improve your health. After all, a thin person is not in every case healthier than an overweight person.

All in all, in terms of value for money, this may be one of the best budget smart scales on the market right now.
