Blocks, the world’s first modular smartwatch, has been cancelled. This comes some four years after its initial Kickstarter campaign.

At the time, the company managed to raise $1.6 million through the crowdfunding platform. The product was, however, mired in delays and some speculated it would never see the light of day. It turns out they were right.

The outfit has now sent out a “Commencement of liquidation proceedings” email to its Kickstarter backers. This includes a “proof of debt” form, but it’s probably unlikely anyone will receive a full refund considering the company is short on cash.

The Kickstarter page has also been updated with the news. The post is only visible to backers, but some have shared images of the text.

Apparently, late into the project a critical manufacturing partner dropped out due to internal business restructuring. This coupled with the loss of a software partner to an acquisition led to a huge financial loss. To cut a long story short, they were unable to raise additional funding necessary to successfully complete the project.

The whole idea was ambitious right from the beginning.

The watch was supposed to feature a Core unit that can be customized with modules. The timepiece utilizes a proprietary connector to link up modules to itself. Each module is designed to be plug-and-play ready and you can connect 4 to 5 at the same time.

They range from ones that measure temperature, humidity, altitude, air pressure, GPS, heart rate, smart button, UV sensor, NFC chip and more. The company said it would allow for the third-party development of modules which means the range of additional features was infinite. The Core unit had an AMOLED display, basic fitness tracking, notifications, 2 day battery life, music control and Alexa personal assistant.

It seems the outfit did manage to roll out a few units off the production line. The watch was showcased at CES 2018, reviving interest and hope that it would see the light of day. However, the few backers that did receive the device said it was plagued with issues such as poor hardware quality and app crashes.

The next generation of Scosche’s hyper-accurate armband heart rate monitor has officially launched. It sports an all-new look, expanded features and variable activity modes.

Essential reading: Best heart rate chest strap

Announced earlier this year at CES 2018, RHYTHM24 is a heart rate monitor for your forearm or upper-arm. Its made of a silicone and polycarbonate hybrid with a soft elastic strap. This makes it comfortable to wear and much easier to put on than a chest strap. The device boasts Valencell’s latest PerformTek technology, which reads your heart rate through your skin with both green and yellow optical sensors. This combination ensures greater accuracy across all skin tones.

Scosche’s original RHYTHM+ is a highly popular device that has long been overdue for an update. When it was launched a few years ago, it was one of a kind. That is not the case any more and there is direct competition in the form of Polar OH1 and Wahoo Tickr Fit.

Still boasting both Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ connectivity, RHYTHM24 brings a number of improvements over the original. As its name implies, the gadget will now run a full day between charges, a significant boost to the 8 hours of its predecessor.

Another important upgrade is waterproofing. The second generation device has an IP68 water-resistance rating, which means it will just about survive a swim session. Just as important, RHYTHM24 also comes with internal memory which safely stores your readings allowing for phone-free training.

There are five training modes and two multi-modes to choose from and a LED battery indicator with lights to indicate heart rate zones. On top of that, the device boasts a heart rate variability (HRV) mode that monitors the time between each heartbeat for stress and recovery tracking. There are also profiles for a number of activities such as swimming, running and cycling.

The heart rate monitor is compatible with a ton of fitness apps. This includes RunKeeper, Map My Fitness, Strava and all other software that support Bluetooth Smart. It will also play nice with fitness devices that support ANT+ technology.

RHYTHM24, as well as its interchangeable armbands in a variety of colors, is available now at Amazon. We will be testing the heart rate band in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for our review.

Announced at CES 2018 earlier this year, the next generation SOLOS smart glasses are now available to buy. Retaining the good looks and lightweight design of its predecessor, the specs build on the original features for cyclists and throw in functionality for runners.

The glasses spit out critical information in real-time through sight and sound. There are newly expanded running capabilities, offering enhanced software to facilitate running metrics such as elapsed time, speed, power, pace, cadence, heart rate and more. Furthermore, users will benefit from turn-by turn navigation, and new audio features including voice control, phone calls, listening to music and group chat communication. Plus you get all the great cycling features of the first generation specs.

The lightweight design has benefitted from a few upgrades including interchangeable lenses and an adjustable nose piece for added customization. An important part of the design is the advanced Vista screen display. Measuring just 4mm in height, it enables heads-up see-through vision helping users to safely view their data while keeping their eyes on the road.

The system is compatible with iOS and Android smartphones and Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches, along with most BLE and ANT+ running and cycling equipment. The rechargeable battery lasts up to five hours, and the intelligent glasses play nice with Strava, TrainingPeaks and Under Armour.

“SOLOS lets me keep my head up to stay safe and enjoy the view with the data I need, where I want it. I’ve also started enjoying music and phone calls through the onboard speakers, while keeping my ears free and fully aware of my surroundings when I am out on the road,” said Phil Gaimon, SOLOS athlete and trailblazing cyclist.

Retailing for a fairly hefty $500, SOLOS can be picked up on www.solos-wearables.com.

Nokia has added to its rich portfolio of health and fitness gadgets a sleep tracking pad. The Wi-Fi enabled gadget nestles quietly under your mattress to help you catch more ZZZs.

“We believe that each night’s sleep is another opportunity for users to better their well being,” said Gregory Lee, president of Nokia Technologies.

“Nokia Sleep gives users valuable insights into their sleep habits and arms them with the knowledge they need to improve their overall health.”

Announced at CES 2018 earlier this year, the Finnish company’s sleep mattress pad is designed to be positioned on the side of the bed, at chest level. There is nothing to wear or do. Simply slip the gizmo under your covers and plug it in. In the morning, the gadget will provide you detailed info on sleep cycles (deep, light and REM) and heart rate. It even detects snoring.

Many smartwatches are too cumbersome for those with smaller wrists and it is this market segment that Misfit is catering to. Featuring a stainless steel case with matte finishing, Path is the company’s third and smallest hybrid yet.

Announced at CES 2018, the timepiece has a 3-axis accelerometer to deliver info on steps, calories burned, distance traveled, as well as both sleep duration and quality. The accompanying smartphone app allows you to set goals, create smart alarms and movement reminders. There is no heart rate tracking, don’t look for it, its not there. This is more about covering fitness tracking basics.

Path does have smart watch functionality, though. When connected to your smartphone it delivers call, text, email, and app vibration notifications. A physical button on the side acts as a remote control for photo capture, music controls and rings your phone if you happen to mislay it. And yes, in case you were wondering, the watch even tells the time!

The 50 meters water resistance means you do not need to worry about take it off in the shower or when going swimming. You can forget about recharging too, as it operates on a replaceable battery that lasts up to six months.

Prices start at $149.99, with delivery expected sometime this Spring.

Suunto has launched its Fitness 3 sports watch. Announced earlier this year, this is both a personal training companion for active people and elegant timepiece for everyday use.

“In design, we always rely on the key design elements of Suunto: robustness, accuracy and reliability, but with Suunto 3 Fitness, we wanted to look even further,” waid Suunto Design Manager Timo Yliluoma.

“We designed it to be smaller and lighter than any of our previous connected sports watches.”

The Finnish company already has a rich portfolio of sports-watches. The main novelty of Suunto Fitness 3 is that its making more of physiological analytics from Firstbeat. The two companies have a working relationship going back over a decade.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Suunto 3 Fitness comes with a Valencell’s optical heart rate monitor which is typically seen as very reliable when it comes to quality of readings. It is this data that Firstbeat’s analytics engine taps into to provide personalized information and guidance.

The most novel new feature is a 7-day training plan that is automatically created by the watch based on a user’s fitness level and overall exercise history. Miss a few sessions or push a bit too hard? No worries, the timepiece will adjust your training plan accordingly.

Essential reading: Ten great watches with GPSfor running and training

You’ll also get real-time guidance with heart rate zones during a workout and a VO2max score. The latter is a heart rate-based fitness indicator that determines your current fitness level. While useful, it is by no means groundbreaking as many sports watches and even some fitness trackers offer this.

Interestingly, the device uses wrist-based cadence for measuring speed and distance in walking and running activities. Which means that you can track speed and distance indoors, too. No built-in GPS, though.

In addition to the fairly standard 24/7 activity metrics, Suunto Fitness 3 taps into your heart-rate variability data to detect all-day stress. While we’ve seen this with some Garmin devices, the device is taking it up a notch by placing this information into the context of your body’s resources.

Stress and physical activity deplete your body’s resources and rest/recovery and sleep replenish your body’s resources. To this end, in the morning the device will provide you with an overall Sleep Quality Assessment. This is a single metric (ranging from 0 to 100), that tells you how well sleep has supported the replenishment of body resources.

The watch is water resistant down to 30 meters, and has sports modes for running, swimming, cycling and gym training. It offers a 5-day battery life with 24/7 activity tracking on. There is also an all-new Suunto app to go along with the tracker.

Suunto Fitness 3 will be available on Amazon (check price) and suunto.com from April 25th. There will be five colors to choose from including Gold, All Black, Ocean, Sakura and Black.

Held annually in Las Vegas, the 51th CES took place between January 9th and 12th. It is estimated some 170,000 people descended on the city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment and nightlife.

CES, which stands for the Consumer Electronics Show, first took place in New York way back in 1967. Since then many products have been announced, some of which have transformed our lives.

These are the biggest wearable tech announcements at CES this year, in the order they were announced.

Casio debuts two new watches for trekking fans

January 12: Casio has added the GB-800 and the GPR-B1000 to its extensive collection of timepieces. Rugged and durable in design, the hybrid watches are built for trekking enthusiasts. The most interesting feature is the solar panel on the face of the GPR-B1000. This will keep the GPS going even when the battery runs is of fuel!

January 11: It is clear the race to make intelligent shoes is yet to catch on in a big way. This is despite the fact that feet are the most logical place from which to monitor movement. This may slowly be changing, however, and a number of companies have stepped up during CES 2018 with intelligent trackers for your feet.

At CES 2018, Casio added the GB-800 and the GPR-B1000 to its extensive collection of timepieces. Rugged and durable in design, the watches are built for trekking enthusiasts.

GBA-800 is the lower-spec of the two. The hybrid comes in six different models all of which have analog hands and come in monotone color combinations. The watch has a built-in accelerometer which keeps tabs on daily steps and calories burned. It also comes with some smart features such as a dual time display with over 300 cities globally, timers for interval training, a Find my Phone function and more.

Essential reading: CES 2018, catch up on all the essential news here

Arguably the more interesting of the two, the GPR-1000 is a fully featured smartwatch. There are two different models known as the GPR-B1000-1 and GPRB1000-1B, which both come with solar-assisted GPS navigation.

The GPS will keep going for about 33 hours when on a wireless charge of about five hours. The solar panel on the face of the watch extends this by an hour for each four hours left in the sun. Tracking data can be saved automatically in intervals, you get the ability to create routes, set start and end points when navigating and more. The timepiece also comes with a triple sensor to measure atmospheric pressure and altitude, compass bearing and temperature.

This is quite a sturdy timepiece, designed for use in extreme outdoor conditions. Featuring a 2mm thick ceramic case, sapphire crystal, and carbon fiber insert band, the watch is shock proof, mud proof and dunkable down to depths of 200 meters. The gadget can also withstand temperatures as low as -4 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 1000 will be available starting in April at the price of $800. No word yet on a release data and price for the G-Shock’s GBA-800, but we’ll update this article as soon as we hear more.

Jabra has added to its stable of headphones the Elite 65t and Elite Active 65t. The company’s third generation of wireless earbuds deliver high quality audio and come with Amazon Alexa on-the-go.

Essential reading: CES 2018, catch up on all the essential news here

While pretty much identical in specs, of more interest to us is the Active 65t which is geared towards active people. While not nearly as advanced as Jabra’s Elite Sport earbuds which have a whole host of features for fitness including heart rate, the Active 65t does have an accelerometer for tracking steps, enhanced grip coating and IP56 certification.

The unit is rich in features and comes with an innovative four microphone solution along with an optimised acoustic chamber which enables advanced noise suppression and voice enhancement. There is one-touch access to Alexa, Siri, and Google, so you can speak to the buds, instead of using your mobile device.

“Our third generation earbuds are testament to our industry-leading engineering capabilities, stemming from our GN Group heritage, for both daily on-the-go and sports use,” said René Svendsen-Tune, CEO at Jabra.

“This is a whole new range of superior sound products, based on our vast knowledge and customer feedback from earlier true wireless generations.”

The Elite Active 65t has five hours of listening time on one charge. This, however, goes up to 15 hours when you take into consideration the extra fuel provided by the portable charging case.

Demoed at CES 2018, Jabra Elite Active 65t will be available in Copper Blue and Copper Red starting mid-January. The buds will set you back $190, $20 more than the Elite 65t which are geared more towards the casual listener so lack the step tracking and water resistance.

It is clear the race to make intelligent shoes is yet to catch on in a big way. This is despite the fact that feet are the most logical place from which to monitor movement. This may slowly be changing, however, and a number of companies have stepped up during CES 2018 with intelligent trackers for your feet.

Sensoria and Vivobarefoot team up on internet-connected barefoot shoe

Sensoria has teamed up with Vivobarefoot, a leading producer of barefoot shoes, to integrate its Sensoria Core technology into a new pressure sensing running shoe. The main novelty is that the shoe comes with an ultra-thin sole to allow the foot to move naturally, along with four fabric thin pressure sensors from Sensoria at the plantar area to track movement.

Essential reading: CES 2018, catch up on all the essential news here

The technology helps to detect forces such as impact score, foot landing and contact time metrics, with extreme precision. Sensoria’s Core hardware in the shoe streams the info to the accompanying smartphone app which provides detailed insights into your running metrics and form.

The Vivobarefoot Smart Shoe will be available later in 2018. No word on pricing yet.

Under Armour launches two new pairs of connected sneakers

The third generation of Under Armour’s smart shoes series is making its debut at CES 2018. Dubbed the Hovr Phantom and Hovr Sonic, the connected apparel spits out running metrics such as distance, stride length and cadence.

The shoes have smart sensors integrated in the soles including a Bluetooth module, accelerometer and gyroscope. According to the company, the onboard battery should last about the length of the shoe’s stated running shelf life. The modules activate automatically when the system senses motion, syncing with a connected smartphone. If you happen to leave your phone behind, no worries. The shoes also contain onboard storage allowing you to sync results later.

Both pairs are priced between $100 and $150 and are already available for purchase in the US.

Sensoria Health and Italian medical equipment manufacturer Optima have teamed up to create Motus Smart, the world’s first smart diabetic footwear.
