The Withings Body Scan scale is available to buy in the UK and EU from today. Originally announced nearly a year ago at CES 2022, the device can assess nerve activity, detect Afib and monitor segmental body composition.

Also worthy of note is that the 6-Lead Electrocardiogram will not be available early on. The feature will be unlocked via a free firmware update pending the European regulatory approval process that is expected to be completed at the end of 2022.

The scale is expected to be made available more widely in early 2023. Here we are mainly thinking about the US. Our guess is that it is taking a bit longer to get the necessary regulatory approvals in that country.

The company is one of the best known smart scale manufacturers in the world. In fact Withings is credited with inventing the first such device back in 2009.

The company next broke ground with its Body Cardio scale. It has the ability to monitor your standing heart rate and an exclusive new measurement – your Pulse Wave Velocity. Thanks to its sensors, Body Cardio detects slight weight variations caused by heartbeats. With this information, the scale can sense the moment when blood is ejected from the aorta and the moment when it reaches blood vessels in the feet. This essentially provides users with a mini heart health assessment.

Withings Body Scan – three breakthrough new features

Body Scan also measures much more than just your weight. Its big selling point is that it has a 6-lead ECG built into the thing.

This is utilized to apply a small direct current to your body (through the feet and hands) which is used to spit out a daily assessment of nerve activity from sweat glands. Nerve activity analysis can potentially flag up certain conditions such as diabetes. This type of analysis is something that can currently only be done by neurologists and endocrinologists in a medical setting. The ECG is also used to look for heart arrhythmias like Afib, and it can detect heart rate and vascular age.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Other metrics that are tracked by the scale include water percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass and extra cellular and intracellular water. The weight measurements are said to be ultra-precise. But there’s more.

The third novel feature of the scale is to do with body composition. This goes beyond the metrics so many of us with smart scales have learned to ignore. Body Scan introduces something not seen before on such a device – segmental body composition. This allows for individual body part body scan measurements for the arms, legs and torso.

At the top of the scale is a retractable handle. You are meant to hold on to this when you are standing on the scale. Inside the handle are two electrodes, in addition to two more electrodes in the main body of the scale, four weight sensors and 14 ITP electrodes.

The build is a tempered glass platform coupled with a 3.2 inch full color LCD screen. Battery life is about a year on a full charge and the scale has full WiFi connectivity.

All of this sounds very exciting. The caveat is, the scale is expensive. In the UK it costs £399.95, in the EU 399.95 euros.

Circular is about to take Oura on with a $259 smart ring. The French-based company has started shipping the device to Kickstarter backers. Circular Smart Ring is also now available for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website with a delivery date set for December.

Smart rings are yet to take off in any meaningful way but the finger is a great place to track a whole range of physiological metrics. One of the most popular such devices is the Oura ring. It puts a lot of emphasis on analyzing the quality of your rest but also tracks some activity during the day. At CES 2022 another solution in the making was showcased. It is called Circular.

This smart ring comes with a 3-axis accelerometer and infrared heart rate sensor that allow it to track a range of metrics. At night this includes circadian rhythm, sleep, heart rate & heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels, temperature and more. During the day this also includes activity volumes with automatic recognition, steps, energy levels and more.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

The Circular ring connects via Bluetooth to your iPhone or Android device. If your smartphone is not close by, it can store detailed data for up to 7 days.

Outside of wellness, the ring dishes out notifications through vibrations, it has smart controls and intelligent alarms. The accompanying smartphone app comes with a personal assistant called Kira which delivers personal insights rather than just metrics and raw data.

“A lot of the wearable devices that we see are too bulky, too gadget looking, lack personalization and present users with raw data without telling them how to use it. As wearable users ourselves, we wanted a device that would not only be more personal but would also use the data it found to help make recommendations for an overall healthier lifestyle,” says Circular’s CEO Amaury Kosman.

Built to last, the 5 ATM-rated scratch and water-resistant device comes with an interchangeable shell so you can tailor it to your liking. At the outset there will be a Silver, Black Fit and Rose Gold shell to swap between. The body is made of nickel-free clinical plastic and the whole thing weighs just 4 grams.

The thing is designed to fit in seamlessly with your life so there is no on/off button. The ring knows when you’re wearing it and it will automatically put itself into sleep mode when possible. Having said that, there is a physical push button which is used as a shortcut to things you do most. Battery life is a decent 2 days on a quick 60 minute charge.

Manufacturing delays

On paper, this certainly sounds like a useful little health-assistant that offers many of the same features as Oura ring. The project originated via a Kickstarter campaign a couple of years ago. However it ran into delays to the dismay of its 1,500+ backers. Delivery was originally scheduled for August 2020.

The global pandemic is cited as the reason for the manufacturing hold up. Delivery to backers has finally started a few weeks ago. But not all of the backers have received the device just yet.

Others can order the ring for $259 on the manufacturer’s website. Interestingly, Circular’s price undercuts Oura’s price by $50. Even better, there’s been no mention so far of a subscription model.

The ring is available in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. Actual delivery to those who pre-order now is set for December 2022.

Interestingly, Circular’s price undercuts Oura’s price by $50. There’s been no mention so far of a subscription model.

The other smart ring in development that has generated quite a bit of interest comes from Movano. An even more ambitious project, the hope is that the device will eventually be able to monitor glucose and blood pressure. If everything goes well, its launch will occur in Q4 2022.

EyeQue has introduced an app, today, that allows anyone to test their eyesight for presbyopia – a very common age related vision condition.

We reviewed EyeQue Vision Check a couple of years back and found it to be extremely accurate. It allows you to monitor for vision changes with detailed reports, similar to those you’d get from a doctor. It is not a substitute for annual eye-doctor exams but it does offer a way for you to perform quick at-home refractive error tests in-between those visits.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Since that review, EyeQue has come out with a number of other products. One of these is EyeQue Vision Check 2, the new and improved home vision test. Every aspect of the product has been optimized to include an entirely new form-factor and better test screens. The current EyeQue suite of products includes the EyeQue Vision Monitoring Kit, EyeQue VisionCheck and EyeQue Try-On Glasses

EyeQue AR powered MyReaderNumber app

Now the company has turned its focus to software rather than hardware. Its latest product is a smartphone app called MyReaderNumber. It offers AR technology vision testing for presbyopia.

As we age the ability of our eyes to focus on nearby objects deteriorates. This is presbyopia – where the eyes lose the ability to change shape as easily as they once did. Some 128 million Americans, or more than 1 in 3, are estimated to suffer from the condition. Symptoms typically start over the age of 40 and worsten when you hit 60 and beyond. It is an annoying part of ageing that most people experience.

A simple way of getting around the problem is to use a magnifying lense. Then, of course, you could hold your phone or newspaper further away from you but doing this too often may lead to headaches, dizziness or eye strain.

The best solution is to purchase a pair of reading glasses. But to get these, you need correct measurements for near reading distance (for example, book or smartphone reading) and mid-distance use (working on a computer or iPad). The MyReaderNumber app offers tests allowing you to arrive at these figures, that also takes into account a users age and distance preference.

The AR-based technology utilizes your smartphone’s front-facing camera to capture two distances. Users can then use those measurements to purchase reading glasses that will best fit their individual needs.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 made a return to Las Vegas between January 5th and 8th 2022 as an in-person gathering. Last year, CES adopted an all-digital format which put a dampener on the whole thing.

2021 was the first year in its 50+ year history that CES was held online. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why – the coronavirus pandemic has wrecked havoc on all such events over the past two years.

Essential reading: Best fitness trackers and health gadgets

The gathering did go ahead last January but it was much more low-key than in the previous years. Many companies chose not to attend. Wearable tech which typically makes a strong showing at CES was rather muted in 2021.

Having said that we did see a few product launches and announcements. This included the Fossil Gen 5 LTE, Amazfit GTS/GTR 2e, Wondercise, Honor Band 6 and Scosche Rhythm+ 2.0. But noticeably missing were some regular attendees such as Garmin, Withings, Suunto, Mobvoi and others.

CES 2022 was back to an in person event

This year CES was back as an in person event, For safety purposes, only fully vaccinated against COVID-19 were allowed to pick up a badge and access the gathering. The organizers also recommended that you test for COVID-19 before departing to Las Vegas and within a day before actually entering the venue.

Media briefings took place on January 3rd and 4th, while the actual show started on the 5th and ended on the 8th. The keynote address happened on the opening day at 8:30 am PST. An hour and a half later, the CES show floor opened.

In previous years the gathering would attract more than 4,500 exhibiting companies, 1,000 speakers and 170,000 visitors. The 2022 event was not of the same scale, but it was still be a biggie. Especially compared to last year. Around 2,100 exhibitors attended, so about half of what it was in earlier years.

Unfortunately, the current Omicron wave has caused some big brands to reconsider. Amazon, Ring, Twitter, Lenovo and Facebook (Meta) have all announced a few days before the opening that they would not have a physical presence at CES 2022.

The digital platform that was opened last year is still running. It is not as good as visiting the show floor in Las Vegas, but it is the next best thing! Like last year. This year the Digital Venue will run until the end of January.

In any case we were glad CES was back to an in-person gathering in 2022. CES is the largest and most influential tech event in the world. Over the years it has been the launching platform for many wearable tech devices we have grown to love.

Best wearable and health tech at CES 2022

After a rather disappointing 2021 at CES on the wearable tech front, 2022 was slightly more exciting. A number of big brands were there.

Garmin

Garmin Venu 2 Plus | Image source: Garmin

Garmin was one of the companies which had a physical presence at CES. The device they chose to announce at the gathering was Venu 2 Plus. Unlike its predecessor, Venu 2 Plus only comes in a single 43mm case size but with the addition of a speaker and microphone. These can be used for making calls, texting and interacting with your voice assistant when connected to a smartphone. The functions might be important to some, but not to others. Everything else is pretty much the same as on Venu 2.

There was lots on speculation onwhether would would also get news of the much anticipated Fenix 7, and a more fancy version of the same called EPIX 2. Nope, Garmin chose not to make a mention. But all eyes now are on January 11th and the week after – as Garmin typically holds product launches on Tuesdays. We could also see the release of Instinct 2.

Withings

French outfit Withings was also at CES. The company has, in November, made Scanwatch available for purchase in the US. This followed a lengthy FDA approval process.

Withings posted a teaser ahead of the event that they will be launching a “breakthrough new device” at CES. We did spot a patent a few months back from Withings for a urine analysis device so felt this could be the product in question. A smart toilet would certainly be of interest as it will add health tracking abilities that were not available before.

Withings Body Scan | Image source: Withings

Instead, the company launched a very smart scale. Withings Body Scan goes much further than simply weighing you.

At the top of the scale is a retractable handle. You are meant to hold on to this when you are standing on the scale. Inside the handle are two electrodes, in addition to two more electrodes in the main body of the scale, four weight sensors and 14 ITP electrodes. These combine to spit out a daily assessment of nerve activity from sweat glands. This can potentially flag up certain conditions such as diabetes. Other functionality includes the ability to detect Afib and segmental body composition analysis.

The $299 device is not available for purchase just yet. Look for Withings Body Scan to land in the second half of 2022.

Fossil

Fossil also made a showing. Last year has been rather quiet on the wearables front from them. We saw a few Gen 6 watches but nothing on the scale of recent years’ product releases. Probably the same factors are in play here that have affected so much of the industry – the pandemic, chip shortages and energy crisis is some countries. But that may be changing now. The company used the opportunity in Las Vegas to announce two new watches.

The first is the result of a linkup with RAZER which is the leading brand for gaming hardware in the US. The limited edition Fossil x RAZER is marketed as a smartwatch for gaming and fitness.

This is a typical Fossil Gen 6 WearOS watch. Which means it has the fast 4100+ Qualcomm processor, support for Bluetooth 5.0, more accurate heart rate tracking than Fossil Gen 5 watches, SpO2 sensor and fast charging. The novelty is to do with the design revamp in terms of branding, colour, straps, available watch faces, etc.

Fossil x RAZER | Image source: Fossil

The other launch was from Fossil’s sub-brand Skagen. The Danish brand’s flagship smartwatch, the Skagen Falster, got a tech overhaul which consists of typical Gen 6 smarts. Its design has remained much the same.

The device is now available for purchase for $295. It comes in five distinct styles in a 41mm case holding a 1.28 inch color touchscreen display.

Nowatch

Nowatch | Image source: Nowatch

Nowatch looks like a smartwatch but it is more akin to a fitness tracker. The device has no screen or typical smartwatch smarts. Instead, it comes with interchangeable disc options that are held in place by a magnet.

The novelty of the thing is that it has the ability to sense stress levels in real-time with the use of a EDA sensor and warn the user in advance. That should give you ample time to take some time to calm down by stretching or perhaps meditating.

There’s little in terms of sports tracking but there’s lots of health tech on-board. The watch has heart rate and heart rate variability tracking, along with movement, SpO2, sleep tracking, temperature deviating, female cycle, cortisol level and more. Battery life is around two weeks.

This is an Indiegogo funded device which is expecting an official launch in March. Pre-orders for non-backers start on February 1st, at a hefty $599.

Circular Smart Ring

Smart rings are yet to take off in a meaningful way with Oura having the best known device. This, however, looks like it might be changing. The ring is a great place to track a whole lot of physiological metrics.

Circular is looking to come out with a solution of their own. Their smart ring can track heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep circadian rhythm, SpO2, temperature and more. It also keeps tabs on steps, activity and energy levels.

Circular Smart Ring | Image source: Circular

Smart functionality is also there along with intelligent alarms and a personal assistant called Kira. You can also tailor Circular Ring to your liking thanks to an interchangeable shell.

The French startup launched the device via a Kickstarter campaign a while ago. The original delivery was scheduled for August 2020, but there have been quite a few delays. The 1,500+ backers should expect to receive the ring this Spring. The rest of us can order it for €259 until February 27th. After that the price jumps to €289.

Sengled Smart light-bulb

One of the most original health products launched at CES 2002 is a smart light-bulb from Sengled. Screw the device in and it will, from that position, monitor your sleep habits and biometric measurements such as heart rate and body temperature. Yes, you read that correctly.

Sengled Smart light-bulb | Image source: Sengled

The device works by using echo location. The essence is that it can detect the sound waves that return after bouncing off surrounding objects. Sengled’s light bulb can even detect if you fall. Buy a few of these and they’ll create a mesh network of your entire home and track your health and sleep which ever room you are in. Interesting? Yes. A bit creepy? YES!!

Movano Smart Ring

Movano is another company looking to eat into Oura’s share of the smart ring market. They are offering what they say is an affordable device which can monitor activity, sleep, heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, restoration, temperature, blood oxygen, steps and calories. The company is currently looking to register their ring with the FDA as a Class II medical device. Even more impressively, the outfit says their ultimate goal is for the ring to monitor glucose non-invasively, along with blood pressure.

Movano Ring | Image source: Movano

Moving Ring has a very low-key design, even in ring standards. It is not available for purchase just yet. Look for it to land in the latter part of 2022.

Abbot “biowearables”

Rounding off our list of the best health gear at CES 2022 are Abbot biowearables. This is not a particular device that was showcased at the gathering. Rather, the company gave a heads-up that it is working on a range of devices that will be able to track certain elements of a person’s body. The list sounds impressive and includes things such as glucose, ketones, lactate and even alcohol levels.

There’s been increasing talk of tech that can do this. A number of different companies are in a race to see which one will be the first. 2022 might be the year we finally get this type of advanced health information, non-invasively from our wrist.

Abbot’s upcoming bio wearables will be built on the sensing tech the company developed for Freestyle Livre. Professional athletes use this to optimise their food intake for training and competition. A ketone biowearable will allow users to know when they are in ketosis. This is a state where the body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates for energy so starts burning fat, instead. There are also plans for a lactate wearable. This would continuously measure the lactate build-up while working out.

Fossil has linked up with RAZER on a limited-edition Gen 6 smartwatch “for the next generation of gamers”. The company has also announced at CES 2022 the launch of the new Skagen Falster.

The American designer and manufacturer of accessories has a slew of smartwatches under its belt. However, over the past year it only released a handful of Gen 6 watches. The reasons for the rather slow 12 months are no different to difficulties that are hitting other smartwatch brands – namely the pandemic, energy shortages in certain Asian countries and chip shortages. It has not been an easy year for smartwatch makers.

Essential reading: Best fitness trackers and health gadgets

Fossil is making an appearance at CES 2022 and we were expecting a few new product announcements. One of these is news about a watch the company has conjured up with RAZER. For those not in the know, RAZER is considered to be the leading brand for gaming hardware in the US, Europe and China. Established in 2005, it now has 18 offices worldwide. The other news is of a Gen 6 edition of the Skagen Falster.

A Fossil x RAZER smartwatch for gaming and fitness

A Fossil x RAZER smartwatch for gaming and fitness is likely to generate much interest. RAZER has a slew of products for gamers such as laptops, tablets and PC peripherals. It even has a smart watch and smart bracelet, but these have not gone down well. Perhaps this is why the company has opted to join forces with a well established player in this market space.

As far as specs, the Fossil x RAZER is a Gen 6 WearOS watch. Which means it has the fast 4100+ Qualcomm processor, support for Bluetooth 5.0, more accurate heart rate tracking than Fossil Gen 5 watches, SpO2 sensor and fast charging.

The timepiece is pretty much a branding exercise and design revamp of the existing product range. There is no mention of software enhancements on the device to support gaming. But you do get some unique design elements including three exclusive Razer watch features like analog, Team Razer and Chroma, three watch faces and interchangeable straps which include Razer’s iconic black and green.

The limited-edition watch will be available for purchase from January 10th for $329. Only 1,337 units will be made available for so make sure you get in early. There’s a holding page on Fossil’s website where you can register interest.

Skagen Falster Gen 6 smartwatch

We also received news today of the Gen 6 Skagen Falster. The Danish brand’s flagship smartwatch gets a tech overhaul which includes the above mentioned Gen 6 specs (accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, altimeter, PPG heart rate, SpO2, off-body IR and ambient light).

The upgraded health and wellness sensors should make fitness tracking a more pleasurable experience. Skagen Falster also comes with quicker battery charging and smart battery modes.

The 3 ATM-rated device has retained its design so the upgrades are mostly to do with the internals. Out of the box the watch comes with WearOS 2.0, but it will be eligible for the 3.0 upgrade when the new version launches later this year. The 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM should hopefully keep the operating system running smoothly.

Falster Gen 6 is available for purchase from today for $295. It comes in five distinct styles in a 41mm case holding a 1.28 inch color touchscreen display. You can choose from silver-tone, charcoal and black case options, coupled with the brand’s stainless steel mesh, silicone and leather straps. All of these have a rotating home button and two configurable push buttons.

Sengled has announced at CES 2022 in Las Vegas a smart lightbulb that has the ability to track your sleep along with a few other health metrics. It can even detect if you fall. Yes, you read that correctly!

Do you really want your lightbulb checking up on what you are doing in your home? Perhaps not. But things like that might become commonplace in the future.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Sengled’s smart light bulb is a one of a kind at the moment. It goes far beyond other such products in the company’s range that have color, motion sensors, speakers, cameras and other innovative features. None of these bulbs require a hub and they all work with Alexa via Bluetooth. The Wi-fi enabled bulbs also work with Google and Samsung SmartThings platform.

Sengled Health Monitoring Light

The unique selling point of Sengled’s latest light bulb is health tracking ability. Screw the thing in and it will be able to monitor your sleep habits, along with select biometric measurements such as heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs.

The device uses radar sensors which can read through materials. Products with this type of technology have become more popular in recent years.

We’ve recently reviewed a sleep gadget which is along these lines, but this one sits on the side of your bed. SleepScore Max utilizes an echo location system to detect your sleep levels without touching you or the sleeping surface. Bats also use this and perhaps that is where the idea came from. They emit sonar and then detect the sound waves that return after bouncing off surrounding objects.

Sengled’s product comes with a Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar. The information gathered is analysed by AI to track your vitals stats.

If something is amiss and there are abnormal changes in your baseline of measurements, the light’s colors will change to alert you. The bulb can even determine if someone has tripped although we are yet to learn what the it does if it detects a fall. Simply flashing a different colored light might be pointless in that instance!

Buy a few Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs for different rooms in your home and they’ll be able communicate with each other to create a mesh network. By creating a virtual map of the space the bulbs can track your health metrics from different areas of your home. Which means you’ll get credit for your sleep stats whether you are in the bedroom or crash on the living room sofa for a quick nap.

It doesn’t get any more non-invasive than that! On the positive side this sounds like a great option for those not wanting to wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker to bed. On the negative side the product has the creep factor written all over it! Mind you, the bulb does not have a camera – but it can sense you and your movements.

If this piques your interest, the Sengled Health Monitoring Light will be out in the latter part of 2022. No info on price has been disclosed yet.

A couple of leaked retail listings hint that we may see the release of Garmin Venu 2 Plus on January 4th. There’s also the possibility Fenix 7, Epix 2 and Instinct 2 could get an official reveal on the same day.

We should point out, the retail listings that have sprung up in the past few days are only for Garmin Venu 2 Plus, not the other watches. But there were lots of leaks in the past month or so on the four upcoming devices. The full technical specs are not known, but a lot is. And we’ve seen images of all these devices plastered all over the internet.

Essential reading: Best fitness trackers and health gadgets

As pointed out in this Reddit thread, one of the leaked retailed listings points to a January 4th availability for Venu 2 Plus. Garmin often releases devices on a Tuesday, typically at 7:00am Eastern US time. So keep an eye out on news outlets and Garmin’s website at that time.

Further adding credence to this rumour is the fact that the timing coincides nicely with the start of CES 2022. The show floor opens on January 5th (closes January 8th), but press conferences begin on January 3rd and run through January 4th. The latter is actually the main day for press briefings. You can find the full Media Days Schedule on this link.

Garmin has confirmed attendence at the event so it is pretty certain that it will be releasing at least one new watch. The company is listed as an exibitor so needs something to generate a buzz. Some 2,200 companies will be showcasing the latest and greatest gadgets during the four day event.

Venu 2 Plus gets a microphone and speaker

We’ve learned most things there are to know about Venu 2 Plus. Unlike the non-Plus version it is looking like there will only be one size option – a 43mm diameter one. The predecessor comes in a choice between a 41mm and 45mm iteration. Despite the smaller form-factor, the Plus packs the same 1.3 inch display as the 45mm Venu 2, with the same resolution. This is thanks to a narrower bezel.

The main upgrade this time around is the inclusion of a microphone and speaker. A third physical button is available on Venu 2 Plus which triggers this additional functionality. It allows users to answer and make calls when connected to a smartphone, reply to text messages via voice on Android phones, control smart devices, as well as interact with a voice assistant.

The question is whether Venu 2 Plus has a standalone voice assistant or if the voice assistant only works through a connected smartphone. According to the retail listings it is looking more likely this will work through a phone.

The other question is whether we will see the launch of Fenix 7, Epix 2 and Instinct 2 on the 4th, as well. It is very likely that we will considering all the leaks in the past month. This doesn’t necessarily all of these will be available for purchase right away, but they should be in the weeks ahead. In any case we have a few exciting wearable tech days ahead of us!

A startup from Japan will be demoing a non-invasive glucose monitor at CES Unveiled, CES 2022 and Showstoppers. At last year’s CES they showed off a prototype.

Non-invasive glucose monitoring is considered to be the holy grail of diabetes treatment. Quite a few big-name brands have tried to crack the problem with little to show. For now, diabetes patients still have no accurate alternative to piercing the skin.

Essential reading: Best fitness trackers and health gadgets

It has been rumored for some time now that Apple is working on sensors that non-invasively and continuously monitor blood sugar levels. The company’s quest to develop the sensors was motivated by Steve Jobs’s own troubles, who in the final years of his life was coping with diabetes as well as cancer.

“In the last months of Steve Jobs’s life, the Apple co-founder fought cancer while managing diabetes,” writes the New York Times.

Because he hated pricking his finger to draw blood, Mr. Jobs authorized an Apple research team to develop a noninvasive glucose reader with technology that could potentially be incorporated into a wristwatch, according to people familiar with the event.”

Other solutions may be around the corner, too. One of these comes from Rockley Photonics. We’ve written extensively about their spectometer-on-chip platform that will allow for glucose tracking along with a plethora of other metrics. The hope is that these sensors will be built into everyday wearables sometime in 2022.

Quantum Operations non-invasive glucose wristband

But Tokyo-based Quantum Operations Inc wants to beat everyone to the punch. They say they have a novel wrist-based device that can continuously track glucose in a person’s bloodstream through the skin, in addition to heart rate and ECG. The brains are the spectrum sensing technology which is built both into the watch and its band.

Simply strap it to your wrist, and choose the glucose monitoring option from the menu. The first results will take around 20 seconds.

“Until now, sticking a need into your finger or arm has been the only available method for accurately measuring your glucose level.” said Quantum Operation CEO Kazuma Kato.

“Our wristband will change that, making the painful daily routine unnecessary for all diabetic patients.”

At last year’s CES the company showed off a prototype. At the time they said there’s still some way to go before the accuracy is up to par with traditional devices.

The company will be back at CES 2022 showcasing what they are calling is the “world’s first non-invasive glucometer in the form of a wristband that is capable of non-stop monitoring”. This year they picked up a CES 2022 Innovation Award in the ”Health & Wellness” category.

Like Rockley Photonics solution, the Quantum Operation device uses patented spectrum sensing technology to measure glucose in a person’s bloodstream through the skin. Users will be able to monitor changes in pre and post-meal blood glucose levels, along with heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and more.

”Although checking one’s blood glucose level both before and after a meal is important, that adds to patients’ already taxing daily routine of sticking a needle into their fingers or arms so many times a day. We are thrilled to be able to make this all pain-free and effortless for them,” Quantum Operation CEO Kazuma Kato said.

“Diabetes affect 463 million people worldwide, causing 1.5 million deaths from it each year. We are thrilled to demonstrate at CES 2022 how our technology can revolutionize the patients’ daily disease management.”

The ultimate goal is to sell the hardware to insurers and healthcare providers. Quantum Operations also want to build a big data platform. This will be used to collate and analyze information collected by their glucose monitors.
