Garmin’s new Approach X40 band is a fitness tracker for golfers
Garmin has released a number of high tech devices this year designed to help golfers perfect their game. This includes its TruSwing sensor – a device that delivers real-time shot metrics to your wrist, and the Approach S20 – a golf smartwatch which also doubles up as a standard activity tracker.
The company has gone a step further now. Its new X40 band is a fitness tracker for golfers that combines daily activity tracking with wrist-based heart rate, plus vibrating smart notifications to keep you connected on the go. Now you can take steps to shoot better golf, while at the same time keeping an eye on your overall fitness and well-being.
The golf band’s Elevate wrist heart rate technology measures heart rate at the wrist 24/7. Using this data, the Approach X40 provides calories burned information and quantifies the intensity of your fitness activities, providing better credit for your efforts. Other metrics are fairly standard. The watch records daily steps, calories burned, distance, time of day, hours of sleep and reminds you to stay active throughout the day with move alerts.
The Approach X40 is one of the smallest activity trackers with GPS capabilities. Much like the Garmin Approach S20, it comes preloaded with data for more than 40,000 courses around the world, and measures precise distances to the front, middle and back of the green as well as layups, doglegs and hazards like bunkers and water. Additionally, the Approach X40 features Green View, which displays the shape of the green on each hole and allows golfers to manually place the pin for more accurate yardages.
“We’re thrilled to combine our golf technology and activity tracking into one sleek device,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales.
“The Approach X40 is the perfect all-in-one solution for golfers who want to know distances on the course and track wellness data without the hassle of switching between multiple devices.”
On the course, Approach X40’s AutoShot round analyzer automatically detects shots along the fairway and measures distances for post-round analysis on Garmin Connect. With its built-in digital scorecard, Approach X40 golf band makes it easy to keep track of your score throughout each round.
The slim and lightweight watch also provides notifications including incoming calls, text, emails, calendar reminders, social media alerts, essentially acting as a wireless extension of your smartphone. All of this is displayed on its 1-inch touchscreen display.

Like most Garmin devices, the device is water-rated to 50 meters so it can withstand a rainy golf game without fear of damage. The rechargeable Li-ion battery can get up to 10 hours in GPS mode and up to five days in watch mode with activity tracking, 24/7 heart rate monitoring and smart notifications enabled.
The Approach X40 is available in black, white and frost blue. Head over to Amazon for more information.
