Wynd: the smart portable air purifier

Air pollution has become an inevitable part of daily life for many of us. Microscopic particles much too small to see with the naked eye are released into the air from cars, trains, power plants, factories, and other sources.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that two million people die every year from small particulate matter. These dangerous particles have been blamed for the irritations you may get in your eyes, nose, and throat. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental dangers to the public and identifies it as one of the leading health risks today.

It is impossible to control the quality of air once you step outside your front door. Beyond wearing a face mask, there is little that you can do. Until now, that is.

Meet Wynd – a Kickstarter backed smart air purifier, you can carry with you at all times.

Wynd monitors and cleans the air as needed. This portable water-bottle sized gadget creates a bubble of clean air around you and your family by removing dust, allergens, smoke, and industrial pollution (PM2.5) from your personal space. Despite its small form factor, the device can deliver over 8 liters of clean air per second.

Behind all the air purifying magic is a medical-grade air filter, capable of purifying particles as small as 0.3um (1 / 210th the average thickness of human hair). The filter is lined with an antimicrobial layer lined with silver to keep it clean from microbes such as bacteria and mold.

You can’t see what’s in the air that you breathe. This is why Wynd goes a step further. In addition to being an air purifier, the device has a detachable tracker that serves as an intelligent personal air quality system which alerts you when the air around you is unhealthy. Deeper insights into your environment, are provided by the accompanying smartphone app.

Wynd’s size makes it easy to travel with, and its particularly useful for those going to polluted areas. Its battery will keep it going for up to 8 hours of typical use.

The project was successfully funded earlier this year and is due to start shipping any time now.
