Withings adds baby mode to its Body and Body Cardio scales

If you are the owner of a Body or Body Cardio scale, Withings (soon to be Nokia) has announced a new way to track your child’s growth – the Baby Mode.

Smart scales are a great way to keep a log of your weight. Step on one of these, and your weight data will find its way to a corresponding app on your mobile device or a Web dashboard. Using the app or dashboard, you can then track your progress over time.

The Withings Body scale measures weight and BMI, along with fat mass, muscle mass, water and bone mass. It has multi-user support and recognition, a free Health Mate app and syncs to the Withings Health Cloud. The Body Cardio is the more expensive version of the scale, which throws in heart monitoring functions. It tracks your standing heart rate and your Pulse Wave Velocity – an indicator of overall cardiovascular health.

We can add to this list now, a new Baby Mode. The additional functionality allows parents to follow the growth of their child  simply by weighing themselves with the baby in their arms. Withings says the mode is very precise – measurements are accurate to 0.2 lb / 0.1 kg.

To access the mode you need to create a profile for the baby in the Health Mate app. Then weight yourself as you usually would. Within 5 minutes, step on the scale again – with the baby this time. The parent’s weight is automatically zeroed out, and the scale will recognize the baby’s profile and save the measurement in the Health Mate app.

Scales produced by Withings, one of the pioneers in this market, are right up there with the best of them. We recently reviewed the Body Cardio scale and found that from setup that went without a hitch, to ease of use, to use of data – it simply does the job. An example of how all smart home health appliances should be.
