Sunrise Smart Pillow: helps you sleep and gently wakes you up
Better sleep starts by knowing what’s happening at night. While this industry is still in its infancy, there has already been a boom in health and fitness wearables offering advanced sleep tracking.
Sleep is essential for a person’s health and wellbeing. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.
A new device called the Sunrise Pillow was launched on Kickstarter last month. With four days to go, what just might be the smartest pillow around has smashed through its $50,000 goal and raised over $600,000. This is a pillow that monitors your kip time, gently wakes you up in the morning with a smart alarm and sunrise simulation, and helps put you to sleep in the evening.
Essential reading: Ten gadgets for advanced sleep monitoring
Sunrise Pillow uses a number of methods to achieve this. These include a smart alarm, sleep tracker, sound conditioner and fan sounds, nature sounds, binaural beats, and guided meditation. Just in case you were wondering – yes, you can even listen to audiobooks!
The pillow sports a strip of lights on both ends that change colors depending on your programmed sleep schedule. For example, gradually increasing lights in the morning signals your body to stop producing the sleep hormone Melatonin and begin producing the energy hormone. This mimics the natural wake-up process.
The pillow also incorporates a gyroscope and accelerometer to monitor how often you toss and turn. It uses this information to detect your sleep cycle and begin the wake-up process when you’re sleeping lightly. You also get a wealth of stats including a sleep score which is fed into the associated mobile app.
