Samsung’s next wearable could be a fitness tracker/smartwatch hybrid
It looks like Samsung has a new wearable in the works, and this one will be a hybrid between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch.
The revelation was made public as part of an email that Samsung sent out through its SmartLab Plus program. Apparently, the device will take on the best bits from Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2. It will be a smartwatch, but one that resembles a fitness tracker due to its smaller body and thinner watch straps.

The tech giant says the device will be water-resistant to the point of being fully swim-proof. It will be designed for 24/7 use, and replaceable bands will allow customers to personalise the look.
In addition to swim tracking, the smartwatch will keep tabs on activity, sports and calories, and will help keep you fit with coaching. The email goes on to say that the features should satisfy everyone, from beginners to hard core fitness buffs. The mystery device will also offer inactivity alerts, for example to prompt you to get up and about when you’re sitting on a plane or to take a break while driving.
Finally, the smartwatch will come with an improved interface and new widgets. Important data such as progress towards your goals will be viewable at a glance. It is likely to run on the Tinzen system, although this bit of information is not specifically mentioned in the email.
All in all, these are all features that we have seen before, so represent an evolution in Samsung’s smartwatch range rather than a revolution. The main novelty is likely to be the design.
Unfortunately, there are no clues as to when we can expect to see the new device. Our best guess is a fall release date, ahead of the holiday sales bonanza. The other possibility could be IFA in Germany, the annual show for consumer electronics and home appliances that occurs in the first week of September.
