A fitness tracking app for your ears won a CES 2018 Innovation Award in the Software and Mobile Apps category.

Statistics on hearing loss in the US make compelling reading. This is a major public health issue and the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. One in five Americans, or some 48 million, report some degree of hearing loss. At age 65, one in three people suffers from the condition.

Studies show taking care of your hearing has a greater impact on your overall health than previously thought. This includes everything from lowering the risk of dementia to reducing depression and anxiety, increasing the ability to concentrate, reducing the chance of falling and more.

Used together with Oticon Opn hearing aids (view on Amazon), the Oticon Hearing Fitness app monitors the impact of hearing on a person’s overall health and wellbeing. The data from the earpiece is combined with typical fitness tracker data on heart rate, activity and sleep. In addition to providing advice on ways to hear better, the app then provides insights on how to improve general health and lifestyle.

“The HearingFitness app helps people with hearing loss understand how their behavior and hearing health habits can influence how effective their treatment is,” said Don Schum, PhD, Vice President of Audiology at Oticon.

“Hearing plays a huge role in people’s overall health and well-being, and HearingFitness, paired with Opn, encourages routine use of hearing aids to improve hearing and the ability to engage in social settings.”

Identifying and addressing hearing loss early is important. It will have a positive impact on quality of life and supports mental and physical health in numerous ways.

Oticon will demo the Hearing Fitness app and its hearing aids at CES 2018. The high tech gathering runs from January 9th to 12th in Las Vegas.
