The Connect IQ platform launched some three years ago. Since then, more than 54 million apps were  downloaded to more than eight million compatible devices. With a bit of coding knowledge, anyone can use the open platform to create watch faces, customised data fields, widgets and apps.

Connect IQ 3.0 opens up Garmin’s audio player platform, enabling developers to integrate music, podcast, audio books and more into compatible Garmin devices. This was to be expected as the company has recently launched the Forerunner 645 Music, its first sports-watch with offline storage of tunes. The update also makes it easier to take advantage of notification features and allows developers to integrate maps into their apps.

Garmin fans will be happy to know a bunch of new apps are coming to their trusty devices. This includes MySwim Pro, Yelp, Trailforks and iHeartRadio.

MySwim Pro is designed to help swimmers take their training to the next level with personalised training plans. Yelp helps Edge bike computer users find suitable routes and places of interests while Trailforks does the same, only for mountain bikers. Finally, iHeartRadio offers premium subscribers the ability to sync playlists to the wearable for on-the-go listening.

The three day 2018 Connect IQ Developer Summit ends today. The gathering, which is being hosted in Garmin’s headquarters in Kansas, is for anyone who manages applications or is considering creating one.

“Connect IQ is ever-expanding in growth and popularity, and we’re excited to host our developers to share firsthand the improvements and the upcoming features they can take advantage of in their apps,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales.

“Having so much talent, creativity and innovation in attendance at this year’s Summit inspires us. We look forward to what they will create with the new platform enhancements.”
