Counterpoint Research says smartwatch Q2 2018 shipments increased by 37% year-on-year. As expected, Apple was top of the pops with a 41% market share. Although the company was well ahead of the next names on this list, Fitbit and Fossil, its share has declined from to 41% from 48% a year earlier.
What’s more surprising, though, is the list of top selling devices. Despite all the hype on the Apple Watch Series 3, users are actually overwhelmingly choosing the Series 1 model. No doubt this is very much to do with the price difference. Apple iPhone users are only opting for the Series 3 device if they need cellular connectivity. Amazingly, Series 1 watches accounted for 9 of 10 Apple Watches sold in Q2 2018.
Fitbit with its “mass-appeal” Versa smartwatch jumped 13 points to snatch second place. Other names were far behind. Samsung which was previously tied with Fossil in third place saw its share fall from 6% to 2%. Its new Galaxy Watch should help it climb up the rankings, though, in the coming months.
