Apple Watch Series 4 to come with ceramic back and ECG sensor

Just days ahead of official launch new details about the upcoming Apple Watch Series 4 have come to light.

Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo informed investors today that Apple’s new device will come with a ceramic back on all its models. Currently, the GPS-only version of the Series 3 model is the only device with a ceramic back. All other models sport a metal back.

Perhaps more exciting is the reason for this. Ming-Chi says the ceramic back will allow the Cupertino outfit to add a new health sensor – an electrocardiogram!

This is not the first we’ve heard of the ECG sensor. Back in December Bloomberg reported Apple is looking to integrate this sort of technology. The built-in ECG sensor could pave the way for the watch to detect heart abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation. We are guessing, Apple has figured out a way to bypass FDA approval.

Readings are on-demand. The user would be required to squeeze the Watch’s frame with two fingers from the hand that is not wearing the device. The device would then pass an imperceptible current across the person’s chest to track electrical signals in the heart.

“The new Apple Watch models will have narrower bezels, support electrocardiography (ECG), and all be equipped with ceramic backs,” Kuo wrote as reported by MacRumors.

“We believe the new Apple Watch models will attract more users on supporting ECG. The ECG supplier is Osram (LED design).”

The added health sensor would certainly help Apple distinguish its device from the competition. Series 4 will also feature some design changes such as much narrower bezels. This is to accommodate a screen that is 15% larger than on Series 3. The dimensions of the device are the same but the narrower bezel will allow for this increase. There is also space for an added microphone and the timepiece is rumored to feature a faster processor and boost to battery life.

Ming-Chi Kuo also outlined several predictions on Apple’s other upcoming products.

Not long to go now. We are expecting Apple to reveal all on September 12th at the Steve jobs Theater in Apple Park.
