The sports watch has also appeared on Amazon but with shipping at end-May. So if you’d rather not wait for the retail giant, Garmin’s website is the best place to go. You can pick up the $599.99 device in black. There is also a blue option if you choose the $749.99 bundle that includes the HRM TRI & HRM Swim HR monitors.

As expected the watch carries over everything we’ve come to love about the Forerunner 935 and slaps on a few extras. This includes on-board storage for music. The advertisement says there is enough room for up to 1,000 songs which equates to 8GB of memory. The feature allows you to stream music when paired with Bluetooth headphones, no smartphone needed. It also provides access to a few music streaming services.

You’ll also get the Garmin Pay contactless payment solution. This lets you make on-the-go purchases no smartphone, cash or cards needed. The feature has become a standard part of the feature-set of all recent Garmin Forerunner and Fenix devices.

The next upgrade are full-color, onboard maps guide you on your run so you never get lost during your workout. Similar to what you get on the recent Fenix line.

The Body Battery function has also found its way to the device as has the Pulse Ox sensor. Performance monitoring features have also received a boost.

VO2 max and training status now come with adjustments for heat and altitude acclimation status. There is training load focus which separates your training load into different categories based on the intensity and structure of each activity recorded. Other new Firstbeat features include recovery time, and more detailed aerobic and anaerobic training effects.

Finally, the device also gets built-in safety and tracking features. This includes incident detection (during select activities), which sends your real-time location to a pre-determined list of emergency contacts. The watch uses your paired compatible smartphone to do this.

In terms of other specs, the Forerunner 945 is water-resistant down to 5o meters depth (5 ATM). The dimensions of the unit are 47mm (1.9″) in diameter and the weight comes in at 50 grams.

Despite the extra features, battery life is pretty much unchanged from the predecessor device. Users will get up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode, 10 hours in GPS mode with music and 36 hours without.
