Mateo has unveiled a product which offers a much less daunting way of tracking your weight. The gizmo even spits out info on your body composition and posture.

It comes in the form of a smart bathroom mat. Looking at it, you’d never guess it was anything but a traditional cloth mat. But concealed inside are medical-grade pressure sensors which capture a whole host information about the person standing on it. This includes weight, bone and fat mass, hydration, pressure footprint, balance and posture.

Of course, the mat does not have a display so you’ll need to open the accompanying smartphone app to check your metrics. But this means weighing yourself is stress-free and it happens automatically every time you step on the mat. The company says there’s AI inside the thing which is able to discern if the person is only partially standing on the mat or is in various states of dress.

The whole family can use Mateo. Thanks to its unique 7000 dot-pressure mapping it can also provide information on posture. The app provides trends and a history for each person, along with exercise to improve posture and dietary suggestions.

“Many people have complicated feelings about knowing their weight. They know it is an important metric to track, but don’t want to start their day frustrated over even slight weight gains, and would rather lose the data point than step on the scale,” said Lenny Dehan, CEO of Mateo.

“Our mat is the bathroom’s new secret weapon for improving health.”

Mateo has been named a CES 2020 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Health & Wellness Category. If it ends up working well the product will certainly shake up the smart scale space. It certainly sounds like a great idea. The smart bathroom mat is expected to hit Kickstarter in March for $179.
