Montblanc Summit 2 Plus is slightly larger and adds LTE

Montblanc has announced Summit 2 Plus, a 4G enabled watch that comes in a slightly larger form-factor than its non-LTE predecessor.

The new iteration has been a while in the making. It was back in October 2018 that the luxury watch maker released Montblanc Summit. This was the first watch to sport the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip. The thing came with some pretty decent specs including the usual fitness sensors, 8GB of on-board storage memory for apps and music, 1GB of RAM, GPS and NFC for contactless payments.

The upgraded edition has all this and more.

The design of the watch has remained pretty much the same with a rotating crown and two side buttons. You still get an AMOLED touchscreen display that is encased in scratch-resistant sapphire. But this time the screen is 0.8 inches bigger at 1.28 inches which means the case size has also grown to 43.5 mm from 42mm.

This is to accommodate the larger battery (440mAH vs 340mAh) that is necessary to keep the more power-hungry version going all day. This extends to 5 days if you switch to low-power mode.

The only downgrade is water resistance. Whereas before it was 5 ATM, now it’s only IPX8. On paper this means it can be submerged down to depths of 1 meter. In reality, it’s okay to take a shower with it, but it’s not a good idea to jump in the pool with the watch on your wrist.

The addition of LTE means users can now make on-watch telephone calls without being connected to a smartphone. There’s a new speaker to allow for the functionality. Users will also be able to exchange messages, stream music and more. In the US functionality is offered in partnership with Verizon, in the UK it is available through Vodafone.

The watch comes in a few finish options including stainless steel, rose gold, bronze steel and black diamond-like carbon steel. Its predecessor was expensive and this is even more true of the new version. The Montblanc Summit 2 plus will go on sale in April starting at $1,170.
