This bezel-free watch is a concept we’d love to see on our wrists
Let’s get this right out of the way – this is not a real-world smartwatch. Rather it’s an interesting concept which caught our attention due to its beautiful esthetics and minimalistic design.
Smartwatches can pretty much go one of two ways – a circular body or a square one. There are slight innovations on both such as the recent Huawei Fit device which comes with an elongated square body. But let’s face it, for the most part these devices all look similar to each other.
This is precisely why this concept captured our imagination. What’s more, unlike some of the other concepts we’ve covered, there’s no reason this one can’t be made into an actual product.
The designer is Jeong Kim from Weekend Works. He imagines a smart timepiece with a round case, but unlike anything you’ve seen before. Feast your eyes on the images in this article.
The goal here is to reduce the need to lean our wrists towards our bodies. To this end, the device can be tilted for easy reading. The bezel-free design makes for a very clean look.
The device has a funnel-like shape which conceals the body from the user. All they see is the watch-face. This does not really reduce the space inside for sensors and the battery, it’s just that the case does not catch the user’s eyes.
The other innovative part of the concept is the strap. Unlike the current crop of watches which are attached individually to each side of a case, Circle Watch has a lock on the back of the frame to remove the strap. The designer also imagines this to be the contact point for charging the device.
All in all, we certainly hope wearables manufactures are paying attention. We are getting a bit tired of looking at Apple Watch lookalikes and plain round devices. A little imagination and design risk taking might actually pay off.
