Wondercise matches your movements with on-screen trainers, now with Apple/Garmin support

Wondercise has announced a global launch with Apple and Garmin wearable support. The smart fitness service comes with unique motion matching technology that compares your movements with on-screen trainers in real-time.

Many of us are searching for safer ways to exercise during the coronavirus pandemic. Wondercise sounds like a novel solution that should make working out from the comfort of your living room much more interesting.

The company offers a smart fitness service that provides access to over 50 classes. These are led by expert trainers such as MMA champion Luis ‘Baboon’ Palomino. Subscribers can choose from a variety of workouts including some “exotic” ones such as Hip Hop Dance, Kettlebell Crush, Tai Chi and more. All of this is tailored to various levels of difficulty.

The most novel part of the system is the Motion Matching technology. This compares your movements to those of on-screen experts. It enables you to know, in real time, whether you are doing the exercises correctly. Apple’s recently launched Fitness+ service does not do this.

Users are also able to see their heart rate on the screen, along with other metrics such as an exercise score. All of this is captured by the Wondercise Band which you are meant to wear on your wrist. It comes with a nine-axis motion sensor and heart rate tracking technology.

The other option is to use an Apple or Garmin watch. This will save you the $79 needed to purchase the Wondercise Band. Series 3 and above Apple Watches are supported along with a wide range of Garmin fitness bands and sports watches.

But even if you don’t have a wearable, you can make use of the service. Video workouts can be played back so the lack of a device or a wearable that has run out of juice should not pose a problem.

The iOS/Android Wondercise app allows you to create a customized profile and training plan tailored to your needs. Just choose a fitness goal and the software will create personalized workouts for you.

Then its down to you to find the 45 minutes needed to complete a training course. To make it easier to fit into your schedule, each course is split into sessions lasting no longer than 10 minutes.

Wondercise is billed monthly at $4.99. An annual subscription of $35.99 allows you to shrink the cost to less than $3 per month, the price of a cup of coffee.

The $79 Wondercise Band can only be purchased in the US, but you can use Apple and Garmin wearables in other countries. There’s also a free 14 day trial for those who want to see what it’s all about.
