TOSY Flying Duo – setting a new standard for boomerangs & frisbees

Pavlok 2: break bad habits and reduce cravings with electricity

Technology is slowly edging its way into all sports, from tennis to soccer. Boomerangs are considered to be perhaps the first heavier-than-air flying machines invented by us. Some have been found to be as old as 10,000 years. Now it’s time for for the next step in evolution – it’s time for boomerangs and frisbees to become smart.

There’s a new project on Kickstarter attempting to fill that space. Something that takes flying disks to a whole new level. Tosy Flying Duo comes with 360 super bright LEDs around the disk, gaming modes and more.

As far as design, the thing meets the standard requirements for a flying disk. It is 175 grams in weight and there’s patented technology onboard which allows for safer and easier catching compared to the traditional thing.

Tosy Flying Duo can fly up to 50 feet in the air and 100 feet in terms of distance. And yes, if thrown correctly using the included launcher it will return to you. Or just use it as a frisbee. So it’s a two in one product.

The other novelty aspect is in the LEDs. You can control the lights with six adjustable brightness levels and six different timer modes. Perhaps you might to use a brighter setting on a sunny day and dimmer setting when playing at night. Just make sure your neighbours don’t mistake it for a UFO!

The company behind the product is in the process of obtaining official approval from USA Ultimate. This is the organisation behind Ultimate, a sport that is played in some 100 countries. But it is the US with the largest player base, estimated at tens of thousands.

Put simply, this is a non-contact sport played by two teams of seven players. The team that scores the most goals wins. A goal is scored when a player catches a legal pass in the end zone – similar to football.

To this end, the Tosy Flying Dude comes with a Professional Ultimate game mode. You can set the light to flash after 7 or 10 seconds if the disk is not thrown. It will also flash the LEDs if the disk hits the ground, again signalling a turnover. This should help to make arguments over contested stalls during Ultimate games a thing of the past.

As you can see, Tosy Flying Duo is not just a frisbee with LEDs. There’s much more to it. You can pick it up in a choice between Purple, Blue, White, Green, Red and Yellow. Designed for players of all ages and levels, the Duo fits neatly inside each other for easy carrying. Everything is rechargeable with USB-Type C, and the battery will last for hours.

The boomerang with launcher along with the flying disk costs $96, which is 20% off the final retail price. The modest $25,000 Kickstarter goal has been surpassed many times over just a few days into the project launch. Delivery to backers is expected in November.
