Swedish retailer lists the Garmin Forerunner 955 with Solar

LIVE – BLACK FRIDAY smartwatch and health gadgets savings are here! Comprehensive round-up, CHECK THE FULL LIST!

A Swedish retailer has listed the Garmin Forerunner 955, along with a Forerunner 955 Solar variant on its website. Could this be indication of an imminent launch?

The solar entry can be found on this page. RunningShop has not published any images of the 955, technical specs or prices. The only interesting bit of info is that a solar variant is mentioned. There are no solar-enabled watches in the Garmin Forerunner series at the moment, so if the 955 does get this functionality it will be an interesting addition.

In our piece at the start of this year on what to expect from the 955 we do mention the possibility of solar. It is not a feature that is top of most people’s wish lists as it doesn’t extend battery life very much. Having said that, the tech is improving as demonstrated by the Fenix 7 so it is becoming less of a gimmick.

Local retailers sometimes jump the gun

There is no way of confirming whether the Swedish retailer posting is genuine. But local retailers sometimes jump the gun and post listings ahead of official launches. So there is the possibility we could see the sports watch in the weeks ahead. So far this is the only retailer posting of the 955. It is also the first mention of a solar version of the watch.

We reported in January on a similar leak. But that one came from the Garmin Australia and New Zealand websites. The entry was up for less than a day before it was quickly removed. It revealed an LTE variant of the 955 which is no surprise as there is a cellular iteration of 945. The price quoted on that website was $1,049 AUD which equates to around $750.

It has been exactly three years since the original 945 was released. That one saw the light of day in April 2019 so the Swedish retail listing gives us hope we could see its successor in the weeks ahead. There is little doubt the 955 and possibly its LTE and Solar variants will land this year. The only question is when.

Vivosmart 5 also expected to land soon

Another Garmin product which is most definitely coming in April is the Vivosmart 5. The confidentiality clause on its FCC paperwork ran out a few days ago. This reveals images of the upcoming fitness band and its user manual.

The display on Garmin Vivosmart 5 looks to be a bit wider compared to the current addition. But other than that the wearable is along the lines of its predecessor. The documentation reveals Connected GPS so it looks like there will be no built-in GPS. Which is a bit of a disappointment as its direct rival – the Fitbit Charge 5 – has this type functionality.
