Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Pro with built-in GPS & larger display is official

A more capable Pro version of Xiaomi Mi Band 7 was unveiled today alongside the Mi 12s series. It packs an even larger display, built-in GPS and bigger battery.

The international version of Xiaomi Mi Band 7 was made available for purchase just recently at the Discover Xiaomi 2022 event. But the original device had been available in China since early June. In that country more than 1 million units were snapped up in the few weeks since the device has been up for sale. The wearable ticks lots of boxes as can be seen from our detailed hands-on review.

The main upgrade with the non-Pro version is the 1.62 AMOLED high-resolution touch display that peaks at 500 nits. It increases screen real-estate by 25% over the predecessor device allowing you to better enjoy the 110+ sports modes that are available.

Mi Band 7 also spits out a few performance metrics. In addition to Vo2Max, which was previously available, we now have Training load, Recovery Duration and Training Effect. This should provide you with more insight into your fitness level, the effect of your training and time needed to recover from a workout.

Another upgrade is to do with blood oxygen tracking. This can now be enabled to work automatically, around the clock. On the predecessor version you can only take readings manually.

Beyond that you get a nice two weeks of battery life between charges with typical use, along with 5 ATM water-resistance. Some 100 watch faces are available for you to choose from.

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 can be purchased from a number of different retail outlets for around $60. There are some early bird offers at $10 less, but this is only for a limited time. You can also pick the device up on Amazon (check price).

For now you get a choice between blue, black, ivory, orange, olive and pink TPU straps. In time, Xiaomi says it will offer neon green, neon orange, khaki green and khaki blue colour options as “exclusive edition straps”.

Xiaomi unveils a more capable Mi Band 7 Pro

There was lots of talk we might soon be getting a Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Pro. And it turned out the rumours were correct. The device was officially unveiled at a product launch conference today alongside the Mi 12S lineup.

The regular variant of Mi Band 7 comes with some iterative updates over its predecessor. So it fair to say that it was not a huge upgrade.

For example, one feature that many were hoping for but did not make the cut is built-in GPS. But it turns out we will not need to wait for Mi Band 8 for this functionality to land. It is available on the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Pro, along with GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou and QZSS.

Another improvement is a battery with a capacity of 235mAh, so more than the non-Pro iteration. Built-in GPS is very power hungry so the added battery capacity is a necessity. With regular use you can expect around 12 days or 6 days with heavy usage. Charging time is about an hour.

Another improvement is to do with the screen size. It goes up once again to 1.64 inches for a more watch-like design and also has the option of being always-on (for some of the 180+ watch-faces). That screen only shows basic information such as date, time and step count.

The AMOLED display has 326ppi “retina level” pixel density (280 x 456px resolution) for a screen size that is 84% bigger than the previous generation. The build is also better featuring a metal chassis.

Lots of colourful band options

There is a version with a gold bezel around the display and one with a gunmetal bezel. Each can be paired with a variety of colourful bands thanks to quick-release wristband support. Some bands feature traditional watch-style clasp mechanisms.

This is the first time we got a Pro version of the Mi Band. With predecessor generations, the Chinese tech giant has only launched a regular and NFC variant. The Pro is now official in China and can be purchased for CNY 400 (around $60). An international unveiling is likely to follow in the weeks ahead.
