A strip of LED lights runs across the face of the device. These lights on the Smart Breathing Trainer show your measurements as you perform breathing exercises. Everything is also displayed in real time in the companion app, which serves as a repository for your training data and customised training plans.

Additional accessories include two plastic mouthpieces, an extension tube, some cleaning sticks and a small pouch to store everything. It’s best to keep all the gear in the pouch so you don’t lose anything.

As far as the underlying tech, if you were to open up the main unit you’d find an advanced MEMS flow sensor inside. It has a measuring range of 0-4500ml, allowing it to assess your lung capacity accurately.

Battery life is good. The device packs a rechargeable lithium battery with a 400 mAh capacity, providing an impressive 15-hour battery life before needing a top-up. With a charging time of only 2 hours, it is ideal for those with hectic schedules. There is no proprietary charging cable here; you can use the one included or any USB-C cable.

Wellue Smart Breathing Trainer review: How it works

You might be wondering how, exactly, this device works. The Smart Breathing Trainer is designed to measure your lung capacity using advanced technology. The tech is similar to what can be found in medical equipment like ventilators and sleep apnea diagnostic tools. The device analyzes your lung capacity and creates personalized exercises that challenge your respiratory muscles, including your diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and throat muscles, to work harder.

Spirometry is a test that doctors and healthcare professionals use to evaluate lung function by comparing lung size and airflow during breathing in and breathing out. The Smart Breathing Trainer brings this test to the comfort of your home. You now have this in the form of a compact, easy-to-use device.

When you regularly practice the customized breathing exercises provided by the Smart Breathing Trainer, your respiratory muscles will become stronger and more efficient. At least, that’s the idea. Like other muscles in your body, respiratory muscles adapt and grow stronger in response to increased demand during exercise training. As a result, you can expect improved lung function.

This translates into better performance in high-intensity sports and endurance events. Which is important to those serious about their athletic pursuits.

Furthermore, the Smart Breathing Trainer aids in the expansion of the small air sacs in your lungs and the removal of excess mucus. This can help prevent fluid buildup in your lungs and improve oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Which is required for the proper functioning of your body.

Also, by making your throat muscles stronger, the device has the potential to reduce the chances of your airway collapsing during sleep. This can help with symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and mild sleep apnea.

Wellue Smart Breathing Trainer review: How to use

Setting up an account

To get started with the Smart Breathing Trainer, first install the accompanying app on your smartphone or tablet. This software will help you manage your training data and guide you through personalised breathing exercises.

I have to say – the process of creating an account and logging in, which should be simple, was made unnecessarily difficult. I went around in circles for a long time. Finally, I discovered that the app would not accept my information because I had my VPN turned on. It finally worked after I turned off the VPN on my smartphone.

The good news is that once that was out of the way and the account creation was completed, everything went smoothly. The app is extremely well designed and works just fine. I was even able to switch the VPN back on.

On initial login you’ll be asked to pair the device to the app. That’s pretty seamless. At this stage you’ll need to enter a few details about yourself such as gender, age, height and weight. You’ll also need to specify for what purpose you will be using the device. I chose “Sports performance”.

First measurement

Then you’ll need to measure your lung capacity for the first time. This data will be combined with your personal information to generate the best training session possible, with your measurements serving as a baseline.

Insert the mouthpiece into the Smart Breathing Trainer to take the first measurement. Then exhale as much as you can before slowly inhaling until your lungs are full of air.

While doing so, try to keep the inhale speed in the “Best” flow range. Slowly inhale is the proper way to test your lung capacity. “Good” and “Better” are other labels for inhalation speed.

It could be challenging at first. However, after a while, you will learn to hold your breath in the “Best” stage. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

As mentioned earlier, the device uses advanced MEMS flow sensor technology to evaluate your inspiratory vital capacity, or lung capacity. It gives you an accurate measurement in milliliters. While measuring your inspiratory vital capacity, the device displays the inspiratory flow rate and volume in real time, both on the product via LED lights and on a number scale in the smartphone app.

You can perform these lung tests regularly. The app stores all measurements and lets you create graphs by week, month, and year, helping you monitor your progress.

Training programmes

You can use the device on its own or in conjunction with the mobile app. The latter is preferable because it offers many training programs targeting different breathing aspects like respiratory strength, vital capacity, and anaerobic threshold. These programs use Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT), Expiratory Muscle Training (EMT), or both and are tailored for you based on your lung capacity and goals.

For example, there are exercises for increasing respiratory strength, expanding lung capacity, and bettering your anaerobic threshold. Do them regularly and in time you should be able to exercise more without getting so breathless. With air flow resistance design the device can help your respiratory muscles to become stronger, faster and more efficient. There are also exercises for relaxation and revitalisation.

Wellue recommends beginning with two five-minute sessions per day and gradually increasing your training time. They discovered that two ten-minute sessions per day are the best training schedule. The device’s advantage is that it is so light and compact that you can slip it into your rucksack or bag and do the exercises whenever you have time.

To complete an individual workout you’ll need to do a number of breathing repetitions. You will also be offered to increase the difficulty level if the app determines you have completed an exercise too easily. Post workout, you’ll get a chart showing how well you did on a per cent scale. All of this is nicely done and is well thought out.

Another chart in the app shows whether you have been diligent in following the recommended exercises. Daily squares in light blue indicate that you have completed the recommended amount of training, grey indicates that you have only partially completed the daily workout, and blank indicates that you have missed a day.

Games

Smart Breathing Trainer also offers breathing games in addition to these training courses. That helps to make breath training a fun and easy part of your daily routine. There are a variety of games available, including Sodas King, Wish Candles, Blow a Kiss, and a few others.

The gist of them all is that you perform exercises to improve the function of your respiratory muscles. However, they are presented in a fun way, with high scores to aim for. There’s even a game that allows you to play melodies with your breath, just like a flute.

Wellue Smart Breathing Trainer review: Does it work?

Of course, the million dollar question is – do these types of exercises actually work? The best place to go to for an answer to this question are third party medical studies.

There’s a recent study which looked at the effect of IMT on runners. Breathing exercises were done twice a day, five days a week, for four weeks. The researchers found that the people who did the IMT exercises had stronger muscles used for breathing in, and they were able to run an 800-meter race faster. They also found that the people who did the IMT exercises had a slower rate of change in blood flow to their legs during exercise.

Several other studies have found that inspiratory muscle training (IMT) can improve inspiratory muscle strength and endurance in both healthy people and those with respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). And that IMT may improve exercise performance in both healthy people and athletes.

For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research in 2016 discovered that IMT was effective in improving respiratory muscle strength and endurance in healthy people, athletes, and COPD patients.

Another systematic review and meta-analysis published in the European Respiratory Journal in 2018 discovered that IMT was effective in improving inspiratory muscle strength and endurance, as well as exercise capacity and quality of life in COPD patients.

Do a Google search yourself. It will flag up the studies that are available.

These findings suggest that IMT has the potential to improve respiratory muscle function and exercise performance in certain populations. However, the effectiveness of IMT may be affected by factors such as the training programme used, the duration and intensity of the training, and the individual’s underlying health condition.

There’s even research that suggests that IMT can help to lower blood pressure, improves vessel health, and improves cognitive health. Clearly there’s plenty of evidence out there in support of respiratory muscle training.
