Navigating the skies: The Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro Aviator Watch

Garmin has been teasing a new watch during the past few days. This afternoon the Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro Aviator Watch has landed.

The company’s 12-second clip had been doing the social media circuit. But it didn’t reveal very much. The video, accompanied by a voice saying “prepare to land,” showed what appeared to be a new aviator-themed watch. The only other detail that was revealed is that the timepiece features a flashlight. Now all uncertainty has been put to rest.

Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro Aviator Watch: A look at the new features

Key specifications and design

The D2 Mach 1 Pro comes with a 1.4-inch sapphire Amoled display housed in a 51-mm case. This makes it 4 mm larger than the previous D2 Mach 1 model. The case is constructed from “diamond-like carbon” titanium, adding to its durability. The watch is available with Garmin QuickFit carbon gray titanium and silicon bands, offering a blend of style and comfort.

Battery life

One of the standout features of the D2 Mach 1 Pro is its extended battery life. The watch can last up to 25 days in smartwatch mode and 46 hours when using the fly activity. This is a significant improvement, especially for those who require long-lasting performance.

New additions

The D2 Mach 1 Pro introduces several new features, including a flashlight, red shift mode, and an ECG app. The LED flashlight is strategically placed on the top side of the carbon gray case. It offers four variable white light intensities, a strobe light, and a red light, providing versatility for different scenarios.

Interface and controls

Users can navigate through the watch’s features using either the touchscreen or the five buttons on the case. This dual-mode operation ensures that you can easily access all functionalities, whether you’re in the cockpit or on the go.

Aviation features

The watch retains Garmin’s signature aviation features, such as a worldwide aeronautical database, HSI navigation, and direct-to capabilities. When connected to a smartphone, it can display Nexrad imagery, Metars, TAFs, and MOS weather reports in a graphic “Meteogram.”

Safety and navigation

For safety, the D2 Mach 1 Pro includes a pulse oximeter and features tailored for engine failures. These include best glide speed, estimated glide distance and time, and a bearing pointer to the nearest airport along with a list of alternate options. These features could be crucial in emergency situations, offering pilots valuable data for making informed decisions.

Pricing, availability and final thoughts

The D2 Mach 1 Pro is priced at $1,399, which is $100 more than its predecessor. Given the range of new features and improvements, the price hike seems justified. Check it out on Garmin’s website.

The device comes hot on the heels of Garmin’s recent additions to its MARQ collection. Released a couple of weeks ago, these watches are part of the MARQ Carbon Collection. The devices cater to various specialised needs—athletes, golfers, and military personnel. They boast a carbon fiber construction, offering a blend of durability and functionality. The watches also feature an array of functionalities like sports activity tracking, navigation, heart rate monitoring, and oxygen saturation measurement.
