Apple Watch SE 3 to feature a design overhaul

According to leaks and rumours, we should be getting the Apple Watch SE 3 in the near future. The device is set to receive a design overhaul, along with a more budget friendly price tag.

The Apple Watch SE line is known for offering a balance of features and affordability. While we didn’t see a new SE model last year, reports suggest that the third generation of this popular smartwatch is on the horizon. To remind, the first iteration of the device landed in 2020, the second two years later.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a trusted source for Apple-related news, the Apple Watch SE 3 is expected to launch alongside the 10th anniversary edition of the standard Apple Watch and the Ultra 3 model. The release is anticipated for September 2024. However, there’s also a chance it could be pushed to Spring 2025, potentially aligning with the launch of the iPhone SE 4.

Design and display

In a departure from previous models, the SE 3 is rumored to feature a plastic body, a move that could help reduce production costs. This represents a significant shift in design philosophy for the SE line. So a less premium look – but a more budget friendly price-tag.

Despite this change, the new model is expected to be available in slightly larger sizes compared to its predecessors. It will reportedly come in 41mm and 45mm options.

The display is said to utilize LTPO OLED technology, boasting a brightness of 1000 nits and a pixel density of 326 PPI. These specifications suggest a clear, vivid display that should perform well in various lighting conditions.

Under the hood

Below the surface, the SE 3 is expected to be powered by Apple’s S10 chip, accompanied by 32GB of storage. Connectivity options are set to include Bluetooth 5.3, 4G capabilities, and Ultra Wideband U2 technology.

While specific details are limited, reports indicate that the SE 3 will incorporate health sensors similar to those found in the Apple Watch Series 8 and 9. So if Watch 10 gets blood pressure monitoring capability or something even more exciting, this is unlikely to trickle down to SE3.

Battery life is expected to remain unchanged – so around 18 hours. No surprise there. In terms of durability, the watch is expected to feature water resistance up to 50 meters and IP6X dust resistance.

Pricing

The pricing strategy for the SE 3 appears to maintain its position as a more affordable entry point into the Apple Watch ecosystem. This is expected to be as follows:

41mm GPS model: $249
41mm Cellular model: $299
45mm GPS model: $279
45mm Cellular model: $329

As with all pre-release information, take all of this info with a pinch of salt. New details should come through as we get closer to the release date.
