Honor Watch 5 is available for purchase now, but only in China

Honor has made Watch 5 available for purchase in its local market of China earlier today. The device was originally introduced at IFA in Berlin, back in September. No word yet on international availability.

Watch 5 can be picked up in five colour choices: Morning Gold, Obsidian Black, Pine Green, Moonlight Grey, and Snow White. The Morning Gold and Obsidian Black models are priced at 999 yuan (approximately $140), while the Pine Green, Moonlight Grey, and Snow White versions are available for 1,199 yuan (around $169).

We actually had a look at the device when we stopped by Europe’s largest tech gathering a couple of months ago. What follows are our impressions.

Large display dominantes

Okay, the watch might not have a foldable screen like the phone that was presented at IFA – but it does immediately catch the eye with its large, square 1.85-inch AMOLED display. With a resolution of 450 x 390 pixels and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, the screen offers excellent visibility even in bright outdoor conditions.

You can see hands-on images in this article. The screen definitely jumps up at you with its large surface area and sharpness. It actually reminds me a bit of the Amazfit GTS, only with a bigger display.

Holding everything in place is a 6-series aluminum frame. On the right is a rotating knob designed to offer an additional method of control alongside the touchscreen. With an IP68 rating and 5ATM water resistance, this smartwatch is ready to accompany users come rain or shine.

Enhanced health and fitness features

Honor has doubled down on health monitoring features with the Watch 5. Running on Honor’s MagicOS 8, the device introduces Scientific Sleep Management, Healthy Morning Report, and Quick Health Scan. These should help provide users with more comprehensive insights into their well-being. Combined with on-device GPS positioning and the ability to track a wide range of sports activities, the Honor Watch 5 aims to be a reliable companion whatever your chosen sport.

Also worth a mention is the battery performance. Equipped with a 480mAh silicon-carbon battery, Wathc 5 boasts a 21% increase in energy density compared to the previous model. The company claims that with regular usage, the battery can last up to an impressive 15 days. This longevity is further optimized by the Honor OS Turbo X system-level energy consumption optimizer, ensuring users spend more time wearing the watch and less time charging it.

The Honor Watch 5 doesn’t skimp on modern connectivity features. It pairs with smartphones via Bluetooth 5.2 and includes a speaker and microphone for Bluetooth calls. With 4GB of onboard storage, users can store their favorite music playlists directly on the device, useful for phone-free workouts.
