White background arrives for Fenix 8 Solar & Enduro 3 in latest beta

Garmin’s latest beta update for the Fenix 8, Enduro 3 and Fenix E introduces a white background option, addressing a notable usability gap that has frustrated users since launch. Beta version 12.14 brings this display option to the Fenix 8 Solar and Enduro 3, matching a capability already present in some other Garmin models.

Memory-in-Pixel displays can efficiently handle white backgrounds without significant battery impact. However, the traditional black background remains the go-to choice for most users, particularly in outdoor conditions where it often provides optimal visibility.

While the classic black display serves most users well, in dark conditions you typically need to activate the backlight in order to read the watch’s display. This is where the white background option is particularly useful.

Prior to this update, frustrated Fenix 8 Solar and Enduro 3 users cobbled together workarounds using third-party watch faces, but these solutions fell short of a native white background option. The issue proved significant enough that some users contemplated returning their devices, making this update a welcome addition.

Beyond the display enhancement, beta 12.14 resolves several performance issues. The update fixes excessive battery drain from Connect IQ watch faces and corrects a sleep tracking anomaly where the device failed to log sleep despite active sensor monitoring. Touch performance sees improvements in strength training interfaces, while settings backup messaging has been refined for Explore integration.

The update streamlines certain features, removing timer touch controls and alerts settings in breathwork activities. These changes appear aimed at improving overall system stability and user experience.

Users can access the early Beta through their device’s built-in update system via WiFi or Bluetooth, eliminating the need for manual file transfers. The update path follows Menu > System > Software Update > Check For Updates. You do need to be a part of the Beta programme in order to access the firmware.
