Suunto introduces new features and festive designs in Q4 2024 update

Suunto is rolling out a new firmware update for its Suunto 9 Peak Pro, Vertical, Race, and Race S models. It’s the 2024 Q4 release that goes under the number 2.39.20. When installed it adds features like map-based navigation tools, a button lock option, and festive watch faces while addressing battery issues and improving stability.

Focus on distance accuracy and GNSS

For those who rely on their Suunto devices for outdoor navigation and tracking, this update is particularly significant. With improved outdoor distance accuracy and the integration of SONY’s v00.173 GNSS software, users can expect more precise tracking during their activities. Whether running, cycling, or hiking in challenging terrains, this update promises to deliver better reliability for distance metrics and navigation, particularly in areas with weak GPS signals.

An automatic compass calibration feature has also been added, removing the need for manual recalibration. This is intended to make directional navigation smoother, especially when moving between regions with different magnetic fields. Users can also save points of interest (POIs) or begin bearing navigation directly using ruler point markers on the map.

Refined usability and connection monitoring

This firmware update introduces several usability improvements, making daily interaction with the device smoother. A new feature within the SuuntoPlus Sports App now allows users to see the connection status of their device directly, providing quick insight into whether their watch is synced properly.

For added convenience, Suunto has included a button lock option in the control panel. This might be handy for avoiding accidental inputs during activity or when navigating through rugged environments.

Festive designs and personalization

Rounding off this update are festive-themed watch faces for the Christmas and New Year season. Alongside these, a green theme watch color has been introduced, giving users another option to make their watch match their style. These visual updates may not improve functionality, but they add an element of fun and celebration for the end of the year.

Addressing issues and stability improvements

Every update also brings fixes to known issues, and this one is no exception. Suunto has addressed battery consumption problems that had affected some users in specific scenarios, ensuring the devices now perform more efficiently. General bug fixes and stability improvements round off the update, offering a more reliable experience overall.
