Teaser from Pebble hints at mystery launch on December 9
This morning anyone who wandered over to repebble.com was greeted by a simple screen with text that says “Something’s Coming,” and a ticking countdown set to finish on December 9 at 3 pm GMT. Are we getting a new smartwatch, or is the announcement something else entirely?
The timing is interesting. The Pebble Core 2 only started shipping a few weeks ago, the colour-screen Pebble Time 2 is still deep in the preorder waiting game with deliveries not expected for a few more months, and suddenly Eric Migicovsky’s tiny team slaps a fresh timer on the homepage.
So What Could It Actually Be?
Let’s be honest – nobody outside the inner Pebble circle knows for sure what this could be. But comments on social media have turned into a decent betting pool.
The strongest money right now is on a round watch. The teaser graphic shows a circular countdown, and the original Pebble Round from ten years ago still has a cult following that never quite went away. Then again, if you have a visual showing a timer – the image is likely to be circular.
Plenty of people in the thread are openly begging for a modern take on the Pebble Steel or at least a new batch of round models to sit alongside the current square lineup. Other guesses floating around include new colour options, a steel bracelet or something completely off the wrist. Eric did mention in his last vlog that the team has been playing with ideas that aren’t strictly watches.
Timing isn’t ideal for everyone
Not everyone is pure hype. Some people are wondering why the team would tease something new when not all the preorders have been fulfilled.
That said, most of the regulars don’t seem too bothered. Pebble’s recent launches have been positioned more as limited runs than mass-market launches. And the typical buyer already knows what they’re getting into. Many seem ready to grab whatever’s next, even if their current orders are still in transit.
All eyes on Tuesday
Whatever is coming, it drops this Tuesday at 3pm GMT. That’s 10am Eastern and 7am Pacific for those in the US. As you’d expect, a mega-thread is being prepared on Reddit. The Discord is already getting busy. And at least one person has booked the afternoon off work just in case it’s something worth live-reacting to.
For a brand that was declared dead almost a decade ago, Pebble still knows how to get a room full of nerds refresh a website every ten minutes. See you on the 9th.
