Amazfit watches are getting their own Garmin LiveTrack-style feature

Zepp Health is working on LiveShare, a new feature that will let Amazfit users share their location while they are training. It can also start automatically with a workout, which could make it particularly useful for running, cycling and hiking.

This one is pretty easy to understand. Head out for a run or ride, and LiveShare can give someone else a link so they can keep track of where you are without repeatedly asking for an update.

LiveShare can start automatically

According to our info, the basic setup involves choosing who you want to share with and creating a LiveShare link for the workout. Email is included as one way of sending that link, and it can remain valid for up to 24 hours.

More interestingly, Zepp Health is working on automatic activation for GPS workouts. Once configured, LiveShare could start when you begin an activity rather than making you set it up from scratch every time you head outside. The feature also keeps track of whether sharing is actually working.

T-Rex 3 Pro is already being prepared for it

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro is specifically associated with LiveShare, making it the first watch we can link directly to the feature. That does not mean it will be exclusive to the T-Rex 3 Pro, but that device is a logical place to start with.

The T-Rex 3 Pro already has dual-band GPS, offline maps and navigation features aimed at people spending plenty of time outdoors. So live location sharing fits perfectly into the same package.

The practical use cases are pretty obvious. Someone at home could follow a long ride or hike, while friends or family at a race could check where you are instead of trying to work it out from occasional messages.

Interestingly, the LiveShare does not yet appear on the company’s roadmap of upcoming features. So work on it might still be in early stages.

Zepp Health is filling an obvious gap

The closest comparison to this is Garmin LiveTrack, which has offered this sort of workout sharing for years. LiveShare appears to be Zepp Health’s take on the same basic idea, although we do not yet know how much information the person following you will actually see.

Location is clearly part of it. What would make LiveShare much more interesting is showing live workout information alongside the map, such as distance, elapsed time or pace, but there is not enough evidence yet to say that will be included.

There is also the question of how the data gets online. Most Amazfit watches do not have an independent cellular connection, so the sensible assumption is that LiveShare will use the paired phone’s internet connection while the watch supplies the workout and location data.

That is hardly a major limitation for the people most likely to use it. Plenty of runners, cyclists and hikers already carry a phone, particularly on longer sessions where live location sharing is most useful.
