MOCACARE launches connected blood pressure monitor

MOCACARE, a Silicon Valley based outfit, has today expanded its range of smart cardiovascular monitoring devices with MOCACuff, a sleek FDA-approved wireless blood pressure monitor that fits comfortably on the wrist.

This is the second product in the MOCACARE line. It joins the MOCAheart device (view on Amazon), that uses thumb scans to measure heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and pulse wave velocity – a measurement of arterial stiffness that is correlated to blood pressure and widely recognized as one of the best indicators of overall cardiovascular health.

“At MOCACARE, we’re driven by a goal to simplify heart health monitoring and to make caring for your health an easy, intuitive and reliable experience,” said Naama Stauber, co-founder and COO of MOCACARE.

“Like MOCAheart before it, MOCACuff is specifically designed to be as simple as possible for everyone to monitor his or her cardiovascular health. Whether you’re viewing your measurements right away or comparing your results over time, consumers can now take back control of their health without missing a beat.”

MOCACuff is designed to help those looking to proactively monitor or improve existing cardiovascular conditions with a smaller, easier alternative to bulky arm cuffs. Worn on the wrist and weighing less than 100 grams, its a suitable option for those who find cuffs on the upper arm uncomfortable.

It is worth noting, while they are a great alternative to upper arm monitors, wrist blood pressure monitors are extremely sensitive to body position. To get an accurate reading you need to ensure your arm and wrist are at heart level.

After each reading, the MOCACuff screen displays pulse rate, systolic and diastolic measurements, as well as a color-coded indicator that corresponds to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) blood pressure categories. The accompanying smartphone app is the first to combine Blood Pressure readings with Pulse Wave Velocity (from MOCAheart).

Furthermore, the app provides you with personalized health recommendations. Based on guidelines from the American Heart Association, these tips empower you to take better care of your health. Being able to regularly measure and more importantly track blood pressure over time is of great help in helping to understand how dietary, fitness and other changes are effective in controlling blood pressure.

Essential reading: An overview of leading smart blood pressure monitors

Its difficult to see what separates MOCACuff from other smart blood pressure monitors on the market, so its really down to the design and whether you have a preference for taking measurements at the wrist. There may be lots of gimmicks or unnecessary bits of equipment for your health available today, but rest assured, home monitors for blood pressure are not gimmicks and they are highly useful.

The device works on two AAA batteries and turns off automatically to conserve battery life. It works with Android 4.0.3 or higher and uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to your smartphone. Priced at $69.99 MOCACuff is available from today on Amazon.
