We suspected that Kate Spade had something under wraps considering the recent FCC application for a smartwatch. But rather than an updated version of the New York Scallop 2, the outfit churned out an entirely new device.

Kate Spade is a designer brand but this is not just a flashy watch as it comes with Fossil Group 5th generation smarts. This entails a built-in speaker, the Snapdragon 3100 processor, 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. Other than that there is built-in GPS, NFC for contactless payments, smartphone music control, Google Assistant and more.

Heart rate is measured at regular intervals throughout the day and continuously when in workout mode. The timepiece uses Google Fit to monitor your activity stats, show progress towards goals and dissect your workout metrics. These can be viewed in the smartphone app or the 1.19-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 328 pixels per inch.

Presumably, the Kate Spade Sport will also benefit from Fossil’s recent announcement that its 5th generation watches are able to make iPhone calls. No other Wear OS timepieces can manage this feat.

Weighing just 40g, the swim proof (3 ATM) watch comes in three different colour-ways including black and lilac, pink and red, and evergreen and black. In a sense the sporty device still has the signature Kate Spades look, only now the scallop is around the 42mm lightweight aluminum topring .

To make it comfortable during those runs the straps are made of silicone and they come with plunge detailing in the shape of a spade. There’s also a glass fiber reinforced resin color-pop case and a signature pink enamel pusher.

Customization options are aplenty thanks to the “choose your look” micro app. This allows you to tailor the dials to fit any occasion or outfit.

Battery life is only around a day. However 50 minutes is all that it takes to get back up to 80%.

“Our customer is adventurous — she loves all kinds of activities, and is always looking for accessories that fit into her everyday life,” said Kate Spade’s creative director Nicola Glass.

We’ve incorporated some of our most iconic design elements, including the spade and scallop detailing, to give the watch a distinct Kate Spade New York look and feel, while the silicone strap and lightweight design gives her the functionality she needs without sacrificing style.”

The $275 Kate Spade New York Sport is available from today at katespade.com. Amazon availability should follow soon.
