Apple has a hand washing app, Fitbit has a clock face for washing hands and Google and Samsung have their own solution. Garmin is not one to be left behind for long. Better late than never.
All of these have been introduced in the battle to combat the spread of COVID-19. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know you should be washing your hands often, particularly if you have been outside. This is the official advice from the World Health Organization (WHO). Soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub are one of the most effective ways to kill viruses on your hands.
So its time to cover Garmin’s new hand washing timer and reminder widget! It’s simply called Handwashing and was released on May 20th.

The software is easy to use. Install it from the Connect IQ store and your watch will vibrate by default every 2 hours to remind you to do the deed. You can also set your own frequency (30 mins, 1,2,3 hours) or create a pre-meal reminder to wash your hands.
The watch will also play a quick demonstration which shows 7 steps of proper hand washing. You’ll then get a 30 second count-down to make sure the job is done thoroughly. Simple and to the point. There is also an option to disable the reminder and skip the tutorial option to get directly to the 30 seconds timer.
The watch also displays how long it’s been since you last washed your hands. Now you have no excuses for bad hygiene habits.
A long list of devices is compatible with the software. This includes the Forerunner 245, 645, 945, Fenix 5 Plus and above, MARQ range, Vivoactive 4, Venue, Rey and a few more. If you do install it you should know the app runs in the background so can potentially reduce battery life.
