Huawei files patent for a peculiar smartwatch with built-in earbuds

A patent was discovered for a peculiar Huawei smartwatch that hosts a pair of Bluetooth earbuds. It is called Huawei Watch Buds. Not much is known about its actual specs or whether it will see the light of day.

The trademark application from March 28th was filed with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). First uncovered by Letsgodigital, it has a Nice Classification of 9 and 14.

The former refers to wrist watches in general. The latter refers to smartwatches containing earphones (amongst other product categories). The name of the device Huawei Watch Buds suggests this will, indeed, be a smartwatch earbuds combination.

There are a handful of such products on the market

The company doesn’t currently have such a device in its offering. In fact, few wearable brands do. Perhaps because it is a strange marriage with limited market potential. Most consumers are looking for something lightweight and simple to wear on their wrist.

Having said that, there are a handful of such products on the market. One example is the Kickstarter funded VOIXATCH. It comes with a bezel that can be extracted to become a Bluetooth earpiece. DrPhone also has several smarwatches with built-in headsets. Then there is Xiaomi which has filed a similar patent a while back. But, so far, none of the big wearable brands have brought such a concept to market.

Interestingly, Huawei has another patent dating back to 2018 which shows a version of Huawei Watch 3 which allows users to store earplugs via the side of the watch case. A release spring prevents the buds from falling out unintentionally. The idea is that this makes it easier to cary earplugs – you don’t have to keep them around your neck, in your pocket or rucksack.

The concept didn’t make it into a real-world product and Watch 3 ended up being a “traditional” smart timepiece. This just shows that patent applications often stay just on paper.

Apart from this patent listing, there have been no leaks on a possible Huawei Watch Buds. Whether we will see such a device later this year or in 2023 remains unknown. But watch this space.

The company has been quite busy in recent months and we saw a few new product offerings. The most recent smarwatch is Watch GT Runner. This is a lightweight timepiece aimed at the sporty types. Late last year we saw the much anticipated Watch GT3. It came packing design and a few sensor enhancements.
