Why install WhatsApp on your Apple Watch Series 8?
WhatsApp has been around for more than a decade now. It was named to resemble the phrase “what’s up”. The service was created in 2009 and acquired by Facebook in 2014.
Since its inception WhatsApp has attracted some 2 billion users, making it the most popular messaging app on the planet. The platform goes way beyond simple texts. Users can send text messages, voice messages, make voice and video calls, share photos and videos, and even share their location. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient of a message can see its contents, providing privacy and security for WhatsApp data.
WhatsApp has become a ubiquitous tool for personal and business communication. Its popularity is expected to grow even further in the coming years.
Apple Watch and WhatsApp are a natural fit
One of the reasons for WhatsApp’s popularity is its simplicity and ability to work across platforms. Like other such apps, WhatsApp is registered and runs on mobile devices with a cellular number. But you can access it from elsewhere such as on tablets, desktop computers and even smartwatches.
Two great choices for Apple Watch users are the Series 7 and Series 8 watches. If you want to save a few bucks, go for the more budget-friendly Watch SE.
The Apple Watch is ideal for using WhatsApp because it allows you to stay connected and responsive without constantly pulling out your phone. This means you can get WhatsApp notifications, read and respond to messages, have chats and even make voice calls from your wrist.
The watch’s small size and easy accessibility make it an ideal choice for quick responses or message checking on the go. Furthermore, the Siri functionality of the Apple Watch allows you to use voice dictations for messages or to initiate calls, making it even easier to use WhatsApp. Finally, the GPS connectivity of the watch allows you to send your location directly from the watch via WhatsApp, adding an extra layer of convenience and functionality.
How to install WhatsApp on your Apple Watch Series 8
There is no native watchOS app for the service. Which is surprising given WhatsApp’s popularity and the Apple Watch’s widespread use. While the built-in capabilities of the watch allow for some basic WhatsApp functionality, a dedicated app could provide more robust features and a seamless user experience.
It’s possible that Meta is still working on a fully functional WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch, or that technical difficulties or other factors have prevented its release. It remains to be seen whether the company will choose to pursue this option in the future.
However, there is a workaround for the lack of the Apple Watch app. It allows you to read and reply to messages on your wearable.
1. Begin by downloading and installing WhatsApp on your smartphone
If you have not already done so, start things off by installing WhatsApp on your iPhone. That is pretty much straight-forward. Register your details and create an account to log in.
2. Go to iPhone Settings to allow notifications
The next step is done in the iPhone Settings page. You need to allow notifications. So head over to Settings.
3. Allow notifications in the Settings page
Tap on Notifications > WhatsApp Messenger. Choose the Allow Notifications option and Show in Notification Centre option.
4. Open the Watch app on your iPhone
You’re nearly there. The next step is to enable WhatsApp notifications on your Apple Watch. This is done by opening the Watch app on your iPhone, going to the MyWatch tab and choosing Notifications.
5. Enable notifications in the Watch app
This will list out all apps that are supported by the Apple Watch. Scroll down until you see the WhatsApp Messenger app. Activate the toggle to enable notifications (the switch should be turned to green).

That’s it. You will now receive WhatsApp notifications on your Apple Watch. This includes text and image messages. You can also reply to them.
However, it’s important to note a few things.
You will not get full functionality of the messaging app on the watch. That’s not really surprising. The small screen and space restriction only allows support for limited features. But it does mean you don’t need to take your phone out of your pocket for some things.
The software effectively mirrors WhatsApp notification alerts from your iPhone to your watch. Like the desktop or iPad version of the software it acts as a second screen. This means if you’ve muted certain conversation threads in WhatsApp, they will not come through to the watch.
In addition to reading, you can also reply to messages by choosing from a bunch of pre-set replies. This includes “Hello”, “What’s up”, “On my way” and more. Just choose the Reply icon above the message and you’ll get access to this.
More usefully, the watch will also use voice recognition to translate your audio message into a text message. You can then send this back as your reply. The functionality can be found by clicking on the Microphone icon above the message.
To silence all communication choose the Do Not Disturb option on your iPhone or Apple Watch. The other option is to select Airplane mode.
WhatsApp third-party alternatives for the Apple Watch Series 8
Okay, there’s no official WhatsApp Apple Watch app. But what about third party options?
Well, there are dozens of third-party apps available for using WhatsApp on the Apple Watch, but individual user experiences can vary significantly. Chatify, WhatsUp, WatchChat, and WristChat app are some of the more well-known options.
WatchChat 2
WatchChat 2 is a popular one. The app, like most other alternatives, is free to download, but full functionality requires a $2.99 in-app purchase. The software is simple to install and grants access to everything from messages to group chats, videos, HD photos, and more.
To install WatchChat 2 on your Apple Watch, go to the App Store from your watch, search for the app, and follow the installation prompts. After you’ve installed it, you’ll need to scan the QR code displayed on your watch with your iPhone’s WhatsApp app to connect the two. You’ll be able to access all of your WhatsApp chats and change settings from there.
Chatify
If you opt Chatify, the procedure to install is very similar. You’ll be given a QR code to scan with WhatsApp. On your iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop > Scan QR Code. Scan the QR code that appears on your Apple Watch with your iPhone camera. WhatsApp messages are now visible on your Apple Watch. You can also respond using your wrist.
It is important to note that third-party apps may not always be able to keep up with changes to the core WhatsApp app, so choose one that’s regularly updated. WatchChat 2 and Chatify are an excellent choice in this regard, as well. Of course, whenever you use a third-party app to access your WhatsApp messages, there is a risk that your data could be compromised. So keep that in mind.
A final word of note is that there are also other messaging apps that have official Apple Watch apps. iMessage, Telegram, and Signal all have dedicated Apple Watch apps that provide full messaging functionality.
