Withings Body Smart scale tracks health without weight obsession

Withings has announced the latest addition to its range of smart scales – the Body Smart scale. It has a unique feature for those who want to track their health but don’t want to obsess over their weight: the “Eyes Closed Mode.”

A low-cost smart scale

Long before smartwatches took the lead, the French company was a pioneer in smart health tracking. Its scales allow users to track various aspects of their health, such as weight and muscle mass, as well as BMI and heart rate.

The latest addition to this range comes in at an affordable price under $100, making it one of Withings most budget friendly offerings. While the Body Smart scale lacks advanced features such as ECGs and detailed cardiovascular assessments found in the higher-end Body Comp scale, it still provides valuable insights into a user’s overall health.

This new scale employs multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to assess factors such as fat mass, muscle mass, water weight percentage, and even visceral fat, a type of fat that surrounds internal organs and is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. Users can use the information to make more informed diet and exercise decisions if they have a better understanding of their body composition.

Eyes Closed Mode

The “Eyes Closed Mode” of the Withings Body Smart scale is its most unique aspect. The feature allows users to record their weight without the scale’s screen displaying it. Instead, they’ll see motivational messages or daily information such as air quality and weather forecasts. The weight is still recorded and synced with the accompanying Withings app for future reference.

A software update scheduled for May 2023 will enable users to measure their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) on the Body Smart scale. BMR indicates the number of calories burned by the body at rest while performing essential functions, providing users with valuable information for making informed decisions about their caloric intake. Additionally, the scale includes a Basal Metabolic Age metric.

The Body Smart scale is available starting today in white or black finishes on the Withings website, featuring a full-colour LCD screen. Some of its other key features can be seen below.
