Evolution over revolution: Oppo’s Watch 4 series, new details revealed

Information on the Oppo Watch 4 Series is continuing to trickle through. This will be the successor to the Oppo Watch 3 series, which was launched in China in August 2022. Given the cultural beliefs about the number 4 in certain Asian countries, it was expected the company would decide to skip the Oppo Watch 4 name. This is a sentiment echoed by other brands like Mobvoi with its TicWatch 5 Pro. However, latest information suggests otherwise.

Oppo has established itself as a prominent player in the smartphone industry. It has gained recognition for its innovative designs and cutting-edge technology. Building upon its success, the company has set its sights on the smartwatch market in recent years. With numerous established brands and emerging players vying for consumer attention, this is no easy task. Nevertheless, Oppo’s wearables have been well-received, particularly in its home market of China.

The latest iteration of the company’s flagship smartwatch comes in two models, the Oppo Watch 3 and Oppo Watch 3 Pro. The claim to fame of these devices is that they were the first to utilise the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chip.

Apart from the new chip, these watches brought an increase in storage capacity by a factor of two over the previous generation. There is also an boost in the battery life. Additionally, there are improvements in the form of upgraded sensors, improved satellite connectivity, and the addition of an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor in the Watch 3 Pro model.


Oppo’s forthcoming innovations: The Oppo Watch 4 and Watch 4 Pro

The first information on the next device in the Oppo Watch series came from a Weibo post in June by well known tipster Digital Chat Station. He actually referred to it as Watch 5. The upcoming device is rumoured to have a square display with curved edges. Which means that in terms of its appearance, it should be fairly comparable to the version that is currently available.

But now the same source has revealed some more information. And the device is referred to as Oppo Watch 4 Pro, contrasting the earlier leaks that suggested it would be called the Oppo Watch 5 Pro.

The core specifications of Watch 4 Pro, as revealed by the tipster, indicate a dual-platform design. The timepiece will be powered by the 4nm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset in collaboration with a BES2700 SoC for its low-power mode. This is a shift from the Apollo 4 Plus, which was previously utilized for low-power mode. Notably, the Watch 4 Pro’s battery is speculated to be 570mAh, a modest increase from its predecessor.

In terms of design, the OPPO Watch 4 Pro is expected to offer slight enhancements compared to its predecessor. Notably, it will come with a 316 stainless steel frame, replacing the aluminum alloy from previous models. The base material will be ceramic, chosen for its enhanced texture and durability.

The visual experience is set to remain consistent, with the Watch 4 Pro expected to showcase a rectangular AMOLED display, coupled with LTPO technology and a curved glass overlay. Furthermore, features like a heart-rate monitor, SpO2 sensor, GPS, NFC, and eSIM support are anticipated.

It is anticipated that the upcoming smartwatches will be offered in both white and black carbon fibre colour options. This will lend an air of refined sophistication to the devices’ otherwise rugged characteristics.


Oppo Watch 4 series: potential release date

OPPO is reportedly gearing up to unveil this next-generation smartwatch later this month, accompanying the launch of the new Find N3 foldables and the Pad Air 2 tablet. This will be followed by the availability in other countries a few months later.
