Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: Comparison feature

Watch GT 4 has been officially unveiled at a dedicated event in Barcelona earlier today. This adds another chapter to Huawei’s evolving GT series. While the predecessers are commendable device, they have their limitations. The upgraded edition aims to address these issues, offering a more refined experience.

Interestingly, the company chose Barcelona for the launch, diverging from expectations of an IFA 2023 unveiling in Berlin. This could indicate Huawei’s strategy to give its wearables a more unique platform.

Huawei has been steadily expanding its Watch GT line, with each new model aiming to improve upon its predecessor. The GT 3 was a worthy successor to the GT 2 but fell short in some areas. Launched in October 2021 on HarmonyOS, the device comes with key fitness sensors, satellite support, and multi-sport tracking. It also includes sleep analysis, atrial fibrillation alerts, stress metrics, and built-in music storage, backed by a two-week battery life.

In 2022, the GT series added a Pro model, enlarging the smaller variant to 43mm. The new 43mm model features a ceramic build, while the 46mm version switched to titanium, both maintaining a sapphire glass AMOLED display. A significant update was the addition of ECG capabilities for heart monitoring. This feature is still only available on the Pro versions of the watch.

The GT 4 aims to iron out certain kinks of the predecessor devices, making it a better contender in the smartwatch race. It is available in Europe and the UK from €249 and £229.99, respectively, making it an affordable yet feature-rich option in the smartwatch market. Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: Design & fashion-forward approach

The GT 4 is being marketed as a fashion-forward device, suitable for both office and gym settings. It comes in two sizes: 46mm and 41mm, each with distinct wrist straps and pricing. The 46mm model is available in Black Rubber, Brown Leather, Rainforest Green GMT, and Steel. The 41mm model offers White Leather, Milanese, and the premium Two-Tone Piano Key. There are seven different styles in total.

In contrast, the GT 3 has a more limited range of straps, which are shared between its 42mm and 46mm models. The GT 4’s strap options are generally more expensive, though, than those of the GT 3. But the added cost comes with more choices in materials and design.

While the weight of the new models has increased fractionally, they a bit thinner. But the differences are so small, you will hardly notice. The stainless steel case build is unchanged. The same applies to the 5 ATM water-resistance.

Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: Health tracking

No new sensors this time around so you still get the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, optical heart rate sensor, barometer, and temperature sensor. But some of these may have been upgraded to new versions. No ECG on board, but there are software based upgrades.

Truseen technology upgrades

One of the notable improvements of the GT 4 is its TruSeen 5.5+ heart rate monitoring technology. This new version promises better precision and efficiency of heart rate tracking, thanks to deep AI learning. The GT 3, equipped with the older TruSeen 5.0+, was already quite accurate but lacked the versatility that the new version aims to offer.

The Huawei Watch GT 4 introduces TruSleep 3.0, a more advanced version of the sleep analysis feature found in the GT 3, which used TruSleep 2.0. The new version offers a more comprehensive understanding of sleep patterns, including REM cycles and sleep quality metrics. This level of detail can be crucial for users who are looking to improve their sleep hygiene or are dealing with sleep-related health issues.

Menstrual cycle tracking

The GT 4’s enhanced menstrual cycle tracking is another upgrade over the GT 3’s calendar-based system. The new version uses physiological indicators like heart rate, body temperature, and breathing rate to predict menstrual cycles. This is particularly important for those with irregular cycles or hormonal imbalances, as it provides a more accurate and personalized tracking system. The feature can even identify cycles for individuals with hormonal and reproductive issues, making it a more inclusive and effective health tool.

Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: GNSS Differences

The GT 4 features an upgraded dual-band five-system high-precision GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), which promises better positioning accuracy compared to the standard GNSS found in the GT 3. This improvement is particularly beneficial for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, or running, where precise location tracking can enhance safety and performance metrics.

Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: Battery life considerations

Both the GT 4 and GT 3 claim a 14-day battery life for the 46mm model, and 7 days for the smaller variant. However, real-world testing of the GT 3 showed it lasted less. This discrepancy between claimed and actual battery life is noteworthy and raises questions about the GT 4’s ability to meet its 14-day promise. Battery longevity is a critical factor for many users, especially those who rely on the watch for extended periods without access to charging.

Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3: Final thoughts

The Huawei Watch GT 4 is another step forward in the company’s wearable strategy. By addressing a few of the limitations of the GT 3, Huawei aims to offer a more refined and feature-rich experience. There are no revolutionary changes here, it is an incremental upgrade. So probably not worth an upgrade if you are holding on to the predecessor generation device.

The GT 4 runs on HarmonyOS 3 and offers some Wear OS-like features. However, the lack of a robust app ecosystem and proper payment support could be considered downsides. Think of it more as a health and fitness timepiece. That’s the watch’s strong point.

These abilitities, coupled with the GT 4’s fashion-forward design, make it a compelling option for a wide range of users. The device’s pricing also positions it as an affordable yet robust contender in the smartwatch market, potentially appealing to consumers who are looking for high-end features without the high-end price tag.

  • Great article, Marko.
And what would you say about Huawei Watch GT 4 vs GT 3 Pro?
In your opinion, is it a comparison that makes sense?
My story: my GT2 is dead, I was thinking of getting a GT3 pro, but the release of the GT4 confused my mind.

    • I haven’t looked into it in detail – but the one obvious difference is that GT3 Pro has a ECG sensor.
