Honor is also joining the smart ring race
The wearable technology market continues to expand, and a new battleground is emerging: smart rings. Honor’s announcement at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, that it is developing its own smart ring, signals a growing recognition of the category’s potential to transform how we track health and interact with our digital lives.
Honor’s Vision: Convenience and connected health
The news has sparked interest and speculation about what features and innovations their version of a smart ring will bring to the market. According to a report from CNBC, Honor is in the early stages of developing its smart ring. The aim is to create a device that offers a unique blend of style, functionality, and convenience.
The company has yet to unveil specific details about the product’s features, design, or release date. However, the quote from George Zhao, CEO of Honor, suggests a focus on creating a device that seamlessly integrates into users’ daily lives, enhancing their connectivity and access to digital services. This will be coupled with AI insights.
“This hardware capability will work together with AI-enabled apps (and) can help you make the professional training course tailored for you because they studied your habits and health data to give you professional suggestions,” Zhao said. “I think AI will transform this kind of applications.”
Samsung ahead of the curve
Honor’s announcement follows shortly after Samsung’s debut of its Galaxy Ring concept. Unlike Honor, Samsung offered a glimpse of its prototype during MWC, demonstrating potential features including sleep and activity tracking, and seamless integration with Samsung’s Galaxy devices. However, it’s important to note that Samsung’s device exists strictly as a prototype at this stage.
The smart ring surge and its appeal
Honor and Samsung aren’t alone in seeing the potential of smart rings. The Amazfit Helio from Zepp Health is set to launch in the Spring of 2024, suggesting the category is poised for a breakout year. Smart rings offer a discreet, less obtrusive alternative to bulkier smartwatches. This smaller form factor could make them a more enticing option for those seeking 24/7 health data or seamless connectivity without the constant presence of a screen on their wrist.
