Huawei Watch 5 leak hints at design overhaul

A fresh leak from Weibo suggests Huawei is preparing Huawei Watch 5. Expected to launch alongside the Mate 70 smartphone later this year, the device is poised to build upon the success of the current Huawei Watch 4 series, offering a redesigned look and a new operating system.

Details are scant, but the leaked information points to a “different design” compared to the previous model. What exactly this means remains to be seen. But given the premium build of the Huawei Watch 4 series, it’s exciting to speculate how Huawei might further refine the aesthetics and ergonomics of the Watch 5.

Perhaps the most intriguing element of the leak is the mention of a “new system,” heavily implying that the Watch 5 series will debut with HarmonyOS NEXT. This next-generation operating system, set to launch on June 21st, is expected to introduce a slew of enhancements and features to the smartwatch experience. While specifics remain under wraps, the potential for improved performance, efficiency, and new capabilities is considerable.


Feature-packed devices

To understand the context of this upcoming upgrade, it’s helpful to look at the current Huawei Watch 4 series. The Watch 4 and Watch 4 Pro are feature-packed devices that a blend of style and functionality. Both models feature a sapphire glass screen and a durable titanium alloy case. The always-on display showcases a variety of dynamic watch faces and customizable widgets. 

Over 100 workout modes, advanced health monitoring metrics (ECG, SpO2, stress, etc.),and AI-powered running coaching are just some of the features on offer. Independent 4G communication and navigation support add to the watch’s versatility.

The standard Watch 4 boasts up to 3 days of battery life on a single charge with typical use, while the Watch 4 Pro extends that to 4.5 days. Both models offer an ultra-long battery life mode, bumping the standard Watch 4 up to 14 days and the Pro up to 21 days, though with some feature limitations.

Keep an eye on this space. If this leak turns out to be accurate, Watch 5 should land in the near future. Perhaps before the end of next month.
