Pulse Mindfulness Ring wants you to forget you are wearing it

Pavlok 2: break bad habits and reduce cravings with electricity

Pulse Mindfulness has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Pulse Mindfullness Ring, a smart device designed for meditation and focus.

The past two years have been all about smart rings as far as health and fitness gadgets on crowdfunding platforms. There must have been at least a dozen new smart rings that have been launched on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Some of these have done well such as the RingConn Gen 2 campaign which has raised the more than $3 million so far. Others have not done so well and backers have been left frustrated with delays and broken promises. Muse Ring One is an example that springs to mind.

Now another smart ring has launched on Kickstarter. And no, it doesn’t have the same sensors we have been seeing time and time again. In fact, the Pulse Mindfulness Ring does not track any traditional vitals data such as heart rate, sleep patterns, steps, or calorie burn. Unlike typical fitness trackers and smart rings that focus on health metrics, the Pulse Ring is uniquely designed to avoid data tracking entirely. This device is all about mindfulness.

A vibrating reminder to stay present

The device’s aim is to help users disconnect and focus on the present moment. To achieve this, the Pulse Mindfulness Ring utilizes subtle, strategically timed vibrations. These gentle reminders help users break away from distractions or unwanted habits, like social media scrolling or nail-biting, and bring their attention back to the current moment. This non-intrusive approach to mindfulness is different from most wearables that rely on digital screens or sound alerts.

The ring works independently but can be paired with the Pulse App for enhanced functionality. The app offers three modes that users can customize to suit their mindfulness journey:

Meditation Mode: Uses gentle vibrations for guided meditation, providing a distraction-free experience that enhances the meditation practice.

Mindfulness Mode: Sends random light vibrations throughout the day to remind users to stay present and mindful.

Focus Mode: Allows users to set vibrations to specific intervals (e.g., every 10, 20, or 30 seconds) to help build or break habits, like improving posture or eating slowly.

Through the app, users can adjust the frequency of vibrations for each mode, manage power settings, and update the ring’s firmware. The app’s integration with common platforms like Apple, Android, and Google ensures that users can easily log in and manage their mindfulness journey without technical hurdles.

Design and Development

The product’s development team includes Tommy Pyykönen, former COO at Oura, bringing experience from the smart ring industry. Pulse Mindfulness collaborated with Haltian, a Finnish company known for its work on high-quality wearable products, to refine the mechanics and prepare the ring for scalable manufacturing.

Pulse also considered sustainability in its production. The ring is manufactured using environmentally friendly factories in Europe, and the packaging is minimized to reduce environmental impact. The choice of materials for the prototypes, such as stainless steel and plans for raw titanium and polished gold finishes, highlights a commitment to durability.

By stripping away the noise of notifications and excessive data tracking, Pulse Mindfullness Ring offers a refreshing approach to wearable technology. Like all crowdfunding projects, the company may face challenges in bringing their idea to life. If you invest, understand that they could face potential production delays, regulatory approval holdups, and software development issues. There are no guarantees in the crowdfunding world.
