Fitbit shifts sleep temperature chart to premium tier

In a move that has stirred up the Fitbit community, it seems the company has placed the Sleep Temperature Chart in its smartphone app behind a paywall. This decision comes on the heels of another significant change in Fitbit’s feature offerings, creating a wave of mixed reactions.

Just days before this announcement, Fitbit gathered positive feedback by finally making its Training Readiness feature – previously a premium-only metric – available to all users free of charge. Better late than never, as they say.

But now it seems the Sleep Temperature chart, which has previously been free to all users, has shifted to the premium tier. Unsurprisingly, this new move was met with widespread approval from the Fitbit community. The contrast between the two decisions has not gone unnoticed.

What has changed?

To clarify the extent of the change, users still have access to some temperature data. Fitbit owners will continue to be able to view variations in their nightly skin temperature over the previous week. Which will probably be enough for most folks.

The reaction on social media platforms has been swift and largely critical. One user on Reddit expressed frustration, stating, “That’s completely infuriating that Fitbit locks sensor data of 100$+ devices behind paywalls.” This sentiment echoes a broader concern among some Fitbit owners. They feel that access to data generated by their own devices should not be restricted based on subscription status. At least not for basic data.

And that the Pixel Watch picking up the mantle forward in the smartwatch department.

An interesting side-note. We attended IFA in Berlin earlier this month. And this was the first year in our memory that the Fitbit brand was not there. What was there was Google with its Pixel watch offering. And under its banner it was displaying the current crop of Fitbit devices. Perhaps a sign of things to come…
