Gorilla Glass maker under EU scrutiny over market practices

The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Corning, the manufacturer behind the ubiquitous Gorilla Glass found in many of our favourite gadgets. The probe centers on whether the American glass giant has unfairly dominated the market for specialized display protection glass.

As most of you know, Gorilla Glass appears in devices ranging from basic fitness trackers to premium smartwatches. If you’ve ever tapped the screen of your Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, or Garmin, chances are you’ve interacted with Corning’s Gorilla Glass. This specially formulated alkali-aluminosilicate glass has become the de facto standard for protecting the displays, offering exceptional scratch and break resistance in the slim profile needed for modern gadgets.

The EU’s investigation focuses on Corning’s business practices, particularly its agreements with device manufacturers and glass processing companies. According to the Commission, these agreements may include exclusive purchasing requirements and special rebates that could make it difficult for other glass manufacturers to compete effectively.

For the wearable tech industry, this investigation raises important questions about supply chain diversity and innovation. Smartwatch and fitness tracker manufacturers rely heavily on Gorilla Glass for its proven durability and optical clarity. The material’s unique properties help protect delicate displays while maintaining touch sensitivity and visibility under various lighting conditions.

The investigation will examine whether Corning’s market position has led to higher prices or reduced innovation in the specialized glass sector. For consumers, the outcome could influence future wearable device pricing and potentially open the door to alternative glass technologies.

The Commission has stated it will conduct its investigation as a priority matter, though no timeline has been specified for conclusions. Corning now has the opportunity to address the Commission’s concerns and propose commitments to maintain fair market competition.

In response to the investigation, Corning spokesperson Meredith Hoing stated to The Verge that “Corning has and will continue to be committed to compliance with all applicable rules and regulations where it does business.”
