Heart tech pioneer Fourth Frontier scores FDA victory with latest monitor
Fourth Frontier just cleared a major hurdle with FDA 510(k) approval for their Frontier X Plus, a wearable ECG monitor.
The device, which wraps around the chest, streams continuous ECG data in real-time to remote dashboards. Its sophisticated algorithms can spot different heart rhythms – from normal beats to conditions like atrial fibrillation – with accuracy that matches traditional 12-lead ECGs. What sets it apart is its ability to maintain crystal-clear readings even during intense physical activity, as shown in clinical trials across India and the US.
The timing couldn’t be better. Heart disease remains America’s silent killer, claiming a life every 33 seconds according to the CDC. The American Heart Association’s numbers are equally sobering – between three and six million Americans have experienced atrial fibrillation, with that number projected to hit 16 million by 2050. Even more concerning is the rising tide of heart problems among younger people worldwide.

The Frontier X Plus will be available as a Class II medical device, with Fourth Frontier partnering with diagnostic testing facilities and cardiac rehab centers to provide remote monitoring services. Which means you’ll need a doctor’s prescription to get your hands on it.
But this isn’t Fourth Frontier’s first rodeo in heart monitoring. They’ve been around for a few years in the consumer market with their Frontier X2.
Consumer Health Technology: Frontier X2
The X2, while not a medical device, brings clinical-grade insights to everyday users. As noted in my hands-on review, it has the ability to answer crucial questions during workouts: Are you pushing your heart too hard? Could you actually work harder safely? It even tracks the impact on your joints with each step you take.
Unlike basic heart rate monitors, the X2 delivers sophisticated insights about heart and lung performance during exercise. While its premium price point might give casual users pause, it’s found a devoted following among serious athletes, people bouncing back from heart issues, and anyone who wants to dive deep into their exercise data. The live ECG feature, though not for medical use, gives users fascinating glimpses into their heart’s behavior during workouts.
This two-pronged approach – medical-grade monitoring for those who need it and advanced fitness insights for those who want it – positions Fourth Frontier at the intersection of healthcare and consumer wellness, exactly where the future of preventive health seems to be heading.
Frontier X2 typically sells for $549 on the Fourth Frontier website. Use code FFGNW25 at checkout for a 25% discount.
