Google offers update & $50 compensation for Fitbit battery concerns

Certain Fitbit users may need to act quickly. Google has confirmed that a few Sense and Versa 3 devices have a risk of overheating due to battery issues. A software update aims to resolve the problem, but it comes with a catch—reduced battery life! The company is also offering compensation to affected users.

Which devices are affected?

The issue impacts only a limited number of Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 smartwatches. Google has reassured users that this is not a universal problem and provided a way to check if your device is one of the affected units. If you own one of these models, you can submit a request through Fitbit’s website to determine your device’s status. Be prepared for a short wait, as processing your request could take up to a week.

For those with impacted devices, the risks are manageable but real. Overheating can occur, potentially leading to injury if not addressed. Google recommends installing the forthcoming firmware update as soon as it becomes available. The rollout starts from today but make take a while to reach all users.

Google statement

What the update changes

The update is designed to reduce the risk of overheating by tweaking the battery’s management system. However, this fix doesn’t come without drawbacks. Users may notice that their battery doesn’t last as long between charges. It seems a small price to pay for enhanced safety. However we will reserve judgement until reports start coming in on how much the battery life is shortened.

If you regularly sync your device with the Fitbit app, you’ll be notified once the update is ready. Keep in mind that failing to install the update within a few days will trigger a factory reset on the device. A reset wipes all data not synced to your Fitbit account, so it’s best to act ASAP.

Compensation and next steps

For those inconvenienced by this issue, Google is offering a $50 appeasement in local currency for impacted users. You’ll need to confirm your eligibility and follow a registration process that may take several weeks. This offer is available until January 2026, so there’s no immediate rush.

If you’re no longer using your Sense or Versa 3, you can still claim the appeasement. Google won’t require you to return your device, leaving you with the choice to continue using it or recycle it responsibly.

Should you be concerned?

While Google states the risk of overheating is limited, users of the affected devices should follow the recommended steps for safety. Continue charging your watch in a well-ventilated area and install the update as soon as it’s available.

You might think that this is a one-off, but guess what – Fitbit has faced similar issues with devices overheating before. In March 2022, the company voluntarily recalled its Ionic smartwatches due to this issue. The recall affected approximately 1.7 million units sold worldwide. As part of the recall, Fitbit offered customers a refund of $299 upon return of the device.

Prior to that, in March 2014, Fitbit recalled its Force activity-tracking wristbands due to reports of skin irritation, including redness, rashes, and blistering. The company offered affected customers a full refund for the returned product.
